Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 dermatology nurse in inflammatory dermatology to cover maternity leave on a fixed term for 12 months.
The successful candidate will undertake management of nurses and a nurse-led service for patients with chronic skin conditions requiring phototherapy, including assessment of patients, planning and implementing care, providing specialist advice and counselling, and monitoring of treatment regimes.
Responsibilities
* Manage the smooth running of the phototherapy unit and nurses within that area.
* Facilitate development of new services to meet the needs of patients.
* Have requisite skills and knowledge to manage a caseload of patients requiring a particular therapy and use clinical expertise and experience to adjust treatment protocols to optimise effects and minimise adverse effects based on clinical evidence/best practice.
* Provide a nurse-led monitoring service for patients on isotretinoin and biological therapies.
* Provide a nurse-led clinic service monitoring disease progress and efficacy of therapeutic drugs for management of inflammatory skin disease in accordance with NICE / MHRA guidelines (isotretinoin / biologic clinics).
* Articulate the evidence base around phototherapy and change practice accordingly.
* Using advanced communication skills, prepare patients for phototherapy (pre-treatment counselling/consent), Minimal Phototoxic Dose testing, independently interpret results and initiate appropriate treatment regime.
* Provide expert interventions/treatments and manage related complications.
* Develop a phototherapy training programme, educating and developing others in theory and practice of phototherapy (eg junior nurses, medical students and doctors).
* Establish and maintain a system for calibration of all phototherapy equipment and advise on principles of metering and dosimetry for use with phototherapy equipment.
* Develops and reviews information leaflets for patients in liaison with Trusts quality department, ensuring information is up to date and evidence-based.
* Produce and review guidelines / protocols for phototherapies using evidence-based practice.
* Provide a support service to staff and patients with chronic skin disease, including Cutaneous T cell Lymphoma.
* Order and maintain specialist supplies (eg ultraviolet light tubes, psoralens).
* Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients.
* Develop methods for identifying, maintaining and improving the quality of care through facilitation of best practice (eg Adverse events forms, monthly meetings).
* Develop and maintain database.
* Make clinical decisions for a defined patient group.

* Use up-to-date evidence to inform decision making and best practice.
* Action results of specialist investigations to assist planning of patient care.
Management / Education
* Responsible for ensuring adequate staffing/skill mix within phototherapy unit.
* Management of nurse-led and consultant clinics to ensure targets are met.
* Leads on health and safety issues/risk assessment with all UV equipment, taking responsibility to ensure safe practice is adhered to.
* Ensures outcomes and action plans of patient complaints are implemented and monitored.
* Ensure compliance with trust policies and procedures.
* Contributes to planning, monitoring and control of resources.
* Manages and identifies educational training and development needs within phototherapy and facilitates the personal development of others involved in the delivery of the phototherapy service.
* Monitors and identifies situations where the scope of practice needs to be expanded to improve the service.
* Manages effective relationships with nursing and medical staff across teams to ensure that all facets of nursing care are covered.
* Ensure effective communication with patients, relatives, community nursing staff, other hospitals and local agencies to facilitate the smooth transfer and aftercare of patients.
* Disseminates information to individuals undertaking professional development to the team, patients and carers, inclusive of link nurse network.
* Develop and promote an effective and responsive clinical nursing environment.
