Minimum Qualifications of Education and Experience

* Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in natural science, biology or closely related field and one (1) year of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.
* Associate's degree from an accredited college in natural science, biology or related field and three (3) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.
* Combination of education and experience equivalent to five (5) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.

Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of the job. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid driver's license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.


Nature of Work

Under general supervision, performs specialized work in the operation of Olmsted County parks. Responsible for the implementation and oversight of all daily facilities operations, administrative tasks, public relations, fundraising and natural resource management. Serves as advisor to volunteer organizations. General supervision of parks staff and volunteers daily. Resides onsite and performs caretaker responsibilities after hours. Leverages the strengths of team members, clarifies roles and responsibilities, and develops employees to reach optimal goals. Supports a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workplace.


Examples of Work

* Leads individuals and teams, builds and maintains engagement, and nurtures a culture of growth to promote a work environment where every employee can reach their full potential.
* Recommends hiring, promotions, and assignments for team members, and provides regular and timely feedback. Manages employee performance, documentation, and disciplinary actions.
* Manages park operations and supervises staff in the maintenance of park facilities, park land, and natural resources.
* Resides onsite and performs caretaker responsibilities after hours.
* Maintains all park facilities in accordance with regulatory agency requirements and maintains accurate files and records.
* Designs and assists with construction of new facilities.
* Collaborates with other governmental agencies to exchange ideas and information.
* Participates in maintenance, construction, or other park activities, such as trail maintenance.
* Participates in long term planning, budget preparation, and fundraising for the department.
* Supports the parks department during emergency situations.
* Makes budget recommendations and monitors purchases to ensure budget compliance.
* Conducts tours of the facilities or park environmental areas.
* Develops interpretive materials for groups and for the public.
* Presents to school groups, libraries, and organizations in addition to other park facilities.
* Completes other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Knowledge of laws and regulations related to natural resources, park lands and environmental issues.
* Knowledge of natural resource management principles, wildlife, park environment habitat, and interpretive materials.
* Knowledge of the facilities and equipment needed in a broad parks and recreation program.
* Knowledge of organizational management principles, methods, and procedures.
* Knowledge of care and feeding of zoo animals. (Oxbow Park only)
* Skill in written and verbal communication including presenting and public speaking.
* Skill in the use of computers and technology.
* Skill in planning, organizing, supervising, and directing the work of others.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
* Ability to assign work to others and supervise their performance.
* Ability to keep accurate records.
