Job overview

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled radiologist with a subspecialty interest in Upper Gastrointestinal (Upper GI) imaging to join our dynamic team.

The Upper GI subspecialty of the Radiology Department at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust plays a pivotal role in the diagnosis and staging of a wide range of upper gastrointestinal conditions, particularly oesophageal and gastric cancers. This service is integral to early detection, treatment planning, and post-treatment surveillance, ensuring optimal patient outcomes in a high-volume clinical environment.

The Upper GI imaging service comprises a team of experienced radiologists and radiographers, delivering a full suite of diagnostic modalities. The department also works closely with the Trust’s upper GI surgical, gastroenterology, pathology and oncology teams, forming a key part of our multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach to patient management.

BHRUT is a recognised regional centre for Upper GI cancer surgery and home to the Digestive Diseases Centre, which integrates gastroenterology, advanced endoscopy, and surgical services. The Trust performs over 18,000 GI endoscopy procedures annually, supporting diagnostic and therapeutic services. Radiology plays a central role in staging, surveillance, and emergency imaging, with active participation in weekly Upper GI MDTs, contributing to the Trust’s multidisciplinary approach to complex GI care

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to attend and contribute to weekly Upper GI MDT meetings, ensuring collaborative decision-making and optimal patient care. This position will be part of a 1:4 MDT rota, ensuring an equitable distribution of workload while maintaining high service standards. Applicants should have prior experience in Upper GI imaging, possess strong interpretative and reporting skills, and demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional development. Apart from cross-sectional imaging, the candidate is expected to supervise and perform barium/contrast procedures. Teaching and supervising radiology trainees and junior radiologists is part of the role.

There is on-call service for general radiology and is consultant led, and the on-call consultant is expected to report urgent AE and inpatient CT scans from 17:00 to 20:00 and 8:00 to 9:00 on weekdays and 8:00 to 18:00 on weekends.

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with. We’re no longer in special measures; we’ve opened two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH); and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, was named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal in 2024.

We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.

Our patients are benefitting from our Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch.

These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 94,000 scans a year.

The majority of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record that will be transformative for our staff and beneficial for our patients.
