Job Title: Game Designer(s) - Systems Design Focused
Location: Remote first, working within UK core hours
Vertpaint is a game development services studio that partners with teams around the world to build ambitious, characterful games. We are looking for a Systems Focused Game Designer who lives in prototypes, loves smart interconnected systems and is comfortable collaborating with multiple clients and projects over time.
If you enjoy taking a loose idea, building a rough version in engine, then iterating it into something genuinely fun and shippable, this is for you.
What you will do
- Design, prototype and iterate core gameplay systems in Unreal Engine
- Own systems from concept through to implementation and balancing
- Build rapid prototypes to explore mechanics, pacing and player feel
- Collaborate closely with clients, designers, artists and programmers to bring systems to life
- Design and support level layouts that showcase systems clearly
- Work across first and third person shooters, helping define combat feel, encounter flow and readability
- Clearly communicate design intent through documentation, diagrams and in-engine examples
- Take feedback from both internal teams and clients and turn it into actionable design improvements
What we are looking for
Must haves
- Strong professional experience as a Game Designer with a focus on systems design
- Unreal Engine experience is essential
- Proven ability to prototype quickly in engine
- Strong portfolio that clearly demonstrates prototyping ability and systems work
- Solid experience designing and developing gameplay systems
- Strong communication skills and comfortable collaborating with remote teams and clients
- Experience with level design
- Experience working on shooters, both first person and third person
Nice to have
- Experience working with external partners or as part of a co-dev / outsourcing team
- Familiarity with live game balancing and telemetry informed iteration
- Experience working with small or mid sized teams where you wore multiple hats
