Project Engineer – Electrical (BESS & Substation Projects)

Overview
We are seeking a highly competent Electrical Project Engineer to support 33kV/132kV substation works in Kent. The ideal candidate will have strong technical engineering capability, experience working on high‑voltage electrical infrastructure, and the ability to oversee multiple contractors to ensure compliance with GAT1 specifications, DNO requirements, and all relevant standards.
This role is focused on technical assurance, design validation, construction oversight, and ensuring that all interfaces between civil, electrical, protection, and control contractors are coordinated effectively.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Design Review
* Review, comment on, and approve contractor drawings, schematics, SLDs, cable calculations, protection coordination studies, and associated technical documentation.
* Verify that designs comply with: GAT1 specifications, DNO standards (SPEN/UKPN/WPD etc. depending on region), ENA and IEC/BS standards
* Identify design clashes, missing information, incorrect assumptions, or non‑compliances and work with contractors to resolve them.
* Ensure HV equipment specifications (transformers, switchgear, protection relays, SCADA, metering, BESS components) align with project and DNO requirements.
Construction Oversight
* Provide site-based technical supervision during installation, commissioning, and integration activities.
* Oversee contractor workmanship and progress to ensure compliance with approved drawings and installation standards.
* Monitor HV/LV cabling, earthing installation, civils interfaces, equipment installation, and protection/control integration.
* Conduct pre-energisation inspections and readiness checks.
* Support SATs, FATs, commissioning programs, energisation plans, and handover documentation.
Contractor Coordination & Management
* Act as the technical interface between multiple contractors (civils, electrical, BESS OEM, protection & control, SCADA integrators).
* Ensure all contractors align with the project’s GAT1 expectations, including: Quality of design submissions, Timeliness of documentation, Adherence to the DNO-approved connection designInstallation to required HV standards, Provision of test results, redlines, and as-builts, Health, Safety & Environmental compliance
* Support progress meetings, technical workshops, and risk reviews.
Compliance & Documentation
* Ensure all works comply with CDM, HSE regulations, and site safety rules.
* Maintain project documentation, change control, NCRs, TQs, and engineering logs.
* Prepare technical reports, design review feedback, and interface documentation.
* Support the completion of O&M manuals, as-built packages, and DNO handover requirements.
Experience & Qualifications
* Electrical engineering degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent experience.
* Proven experience on 132kV and/or 33kV infrastructure projects.
* Strong familiarity with BESS, substations, switchgear, transformers, protection systems, and SCADA.
* Previous experience working with or alongside DNOs (e.g., UKPN, SPEN, WPD, SSEN).
* Excellent communication skills and a proactive approach to solving technical issues.
* Ability to manage multiple engineering interfaces and contractors simultaneously
