Overview
Specialist Doctor, Oral Surgery – fixed term of 1 year to cover maternity leave. 8.25PA contract covering Tuesdays to Fridays; part-time/job share applicants welcome. Closing date: 15 October 2025.
We are seeking a Specialist Doctor in our Oral Surgery team who will carry out face to face assessments and a range of oral surgery treatments, both under local anaesthetic and general anaesthetic.
Main duties of the job
The Specialist Doctor is expected to participate in all aspects of the work of the department under the general direction of the Consultants, including outpatient clinics and day surgery operating sessions. There is no on‑call commitment attached to this post.

Job responsibilities
Summary of training and educational objectives:
* Develop skills in the performance of exodontia and minor oral surgery
* Develop a further understanding of the dental assessment and management of patients requiring bone protection medication, radiotherapy and cardiac valve replacement surgery
* Develop a further understanding of the assessment and management of patients presenting with complex orthodontic/oral surgery needs
* Develop a further understanding of the assessment and management of patients requiring outpatient treatment under intravenous sedation
* Develop skills in managing commonly encountered oral medicine pathologies
* Develop an understanding of the management of medically compromised patients requiring dental or oral surgery treatment
Person Specification
Education and qualifications
* For Dentists: MFDS/ FDS or MJDF; For Medics: MRCS or FRCS
* Full registration and a License to Practice with the General Dental Council (GDC) and/or General Medical Council
* Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons/Faculty of General Dental Practitioners MFDS/MJDF/MFGDP
* Active NHS Primary Care Dental Performer status
* Successful completion of a Deanery-approved Dental Core Training program
* On, or eligible for, the GDC Specialist list in Oral Surgery
Knowledge
* Experienced in the diagnosis and management of all common oral surgery and benign oral medicine conditions
* Sufficient experience since first obtaining registration, ideally including adequate experience as a Dental Core/SHO or a higher grade in Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery or Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
* Knowledge and understanding of IV sedation practice in the United Kingdom
* Breadth of dental experience in and outside specialty
* Diploma in Dental Sedation, SAAD training in conscious sedation, or equivalent
Experience
* Understanding of NHS/Clinical governance/Resource constraints
* Involvement in Clinical Audit/Quality Improvement
* Experience of implementing evidence-based change to improve patient care
* Experience and evidence of leading improvement activities
* Evidence of managerial skills: achievements / courses attended
