Job Description
The registered professional nurse is responsible for utilizing job skills to effectively carry out the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, evaluation, documentation, and time management. She/he is responsible for quality communication, teamwork, leadership, and professionalism. Additionally, the nurse directs, coordinates, and implements patient teaching, quality/safety initiatives, and activities of other health team personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing.
A Registered Nurse I (RN I) is responsible for the care of the population they are assigned. An RN I must complete yearly mandatory competencies, unit-specific competencies as identified by the Director/Designee, and meet Professional Practice Ladder requirements, which include assuming responsibility as Charge Nurse, participating in PI activities, and contributing to department initiatives. The RN I also communicates and shares information with the Director/Designee and co-workers, and participates in educational activities such as seminars, conferences, workshops, or reading nursing articles. The portfolio must be current and submitted annually by March 1st. The RN routinely solicits and validates patient/family satisfaction, participates in peer reviews, and develops educational materials for staff and patients.
Education
* Associates Degree in Nursing (RN Diploma, ASN, or ADN) required
* Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
Certification & Licensure
* RN License required
* BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) from the American Heart Association required
* Relevant Specialty Certification preferred
* Must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia, either via a multi-state license under the Nurse Licensure Compact or a single-state license valid in Virginia
* New hires must obtain American Heart Association certification prior to completing orientation
Qualifications
* Competent in providing care based on the cognitive, physical, emotional, and developmental stages of human growth
* Capable of providing care utilizing the nursing process
* Reliable communication means with the hospital (e.g., phone)
* For new RN I hires or those promoted to RN I, must secure an Eligibility to Test Letter from the Virginia Board of Nursing or equivalent verification, depending on residency and licensure status
