Defra group Commercial is looking to appoint an Assistant Commercial Officer to the Monitoring And Related Services (MARS) commercial team within our Environmental Goods and Services spend category. This will be a key support role for the team, which could also include leading on your own procurements. This role is ideal for starting or building upon a career in the commercial/procurement profession.
Defra Group Commercial (DGC) is part of Defra, the central Government Department responsible for growing the rural economy, improving the environment, and safeguarding animal and plant health. DGC provides a commercial service to organisations within the Defra Network.
This post requires assisting customers and commercial teams to deliver value effectively and innovatively, meeting customer outcomes and objectives alongside Spending Review targets.
The post-holder will award and monitor supplier contracts in accordance with Defra’s policies and procedures, ensuring value for money and applying the Commercial DNA principles.
The role demands a proactive approach to customer service, including reviewing requests from internal customers, advising on policies, and providing commercial guidance and governance support.
The post-holder will engage with colleagues across the country, building the Commercial network internally and within the wider Defra and Government bodies.
The Environmental Goods and Services category handles a high volume of scientifically focused agreements, mainly low- to medium-value projects. The role is pivotal in ensuring efficient procurement processes and excellent customer service.
The Assistant Commercial Officer will report to a Senior Category / Commercial Officer (SEO). The responsibilities outlined are generic and may apply to all Assistant Commercial Officer roles.
You will
* Support project delivery, procurements, and contract management, providing functional input to improve processes and efficiency.
* Explain Commercial guidance to operational teams to ensure compliance and facilitate contact with the Commercial team.
* Stay updated on legislation and best practices to inform priorities and alignment.
* Maintain effective relationships with operational teams and customers to understand issues and support them.
* Assist in delivering results on time, within quality standards and costs, supporting environmental goals.
* Manage resources effectively, including sourcing and contract management systems, to meet business needs.
* Contribute to the development of category plans and enhance market knowledge.
* Provide administrative support to the team, ensuring efficient systems are in place.
* Support contract delivery, identifying and managing sustainable impacts throughout the lifecycle.
The post-holder will be accountable for:
* Providing day-to-day advice on commercial issues and governance, contributing to savings targets.
* Assisting with complex procurements, including research, market engagement, document preparation, and evaluation support.
* Supporting contractual interactions and managing key supplier relationships.
* Maintaining a customer-focused approach to build relationships and raise the profile of Commercial activities.
* Participating in stakeholder meetings and supporting colleagues.
* Monitoring and ensuring accuracy of commercial and contract management systems.
* Continuing professional development to enhance commercial skills and support category planning.
