This is an exciting opportunity to join The Griffin Institute for Surgical Training & Research (TGI), a small but growing Centre of Excellence based at Northwick Park & St Mark's Hospitals, Harrow, as a Theatre Technician.
TGI delivers high-quality training for NHS surgeons, specialising in robotic surgery and other advanced techniques. We also conduct bespoke preclinical contract research studies within our licenced facilities.
The Role:
The post holder will primarily work within the operating theatre environment, supporting the set-up, delivery and breakdown of surgical training courses and research studies.
There will also be opportunities to support the Biological Services Unit (BSU), including husbandry and occasional work involving human cadavers used for training and research purposes.
The successful candidate will be self-motivated, keen to develop new skills, and an effective team member. Following probation, they will undertake training towards a Home Office Personal Licence for in vivo work. Full in-house training will be provided.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
* Preparing, setting up, and supporting the delivery of surgical training courses and research studies in the operating theatre (full training provided)
* Setting up and clearing down theatre environments, maintaining high standards of cleanliness, organisation, and infection control
* Cleaning, disinfecting, sterilising, and maintaining surgical instruments and equipment, including basic checks and fault reporting
* Monitoring and maintaining stock levels of consumables and ensuring correct storage and traceability
* Acquiring quotes on ordering surgical equipment, devices and consumables for specific training courses and studies
* Working in accordance with SOPs, risk assessments, and GLP / non-GLP requirements as appropriate
* Writing and reviewing SOPs
* Completing accurate documentation and records to support quality, compliance, and audit readiness
* Operating the CT scanner and mobile C-arm (full training will be provided)
* Supporting clinical observations and research activities pre- and post-regulated procedures
* Administering medications and assisting with procedures in line with approved study plans (once trained and licenced)
* In vivo induction and maintenance of anaesthesia (once trained and licenced)
* Assisting with post-mortem examinations, Schedule 1 procedures, and appropriate disposal of biological and cadaveric material
* Working professionally and respectfully with human cadavers used for surgical training and research
* Rota-based weekend and bank holiday work to support husbandry, training courses, and research studies
The post holder will be expected to work flexibly and contribute positively to the smooth running and continuous improvement of theatre and support services
Person specification:
Essential
* Minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade A-C including English and Mathematics
* Strong organisational and observational skills, with good attention to detail and problem-solving ability
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Good record-keeping abilities and confidence completing documentation
* Willingness to learn new skills and work in regulated environments, following SOPs and protocols
* Enthusiastic, reliable, and able to work effectively as part of a team
Desirable
* Experience working in an operating theatre, clinical, mortuary, or similar technical environment
* Home Office Personal Licence (Modules A-C) with procedural experience
* Experience working in a GLP facility
* Degree in a relevant scientific or biomedical discipline
* Experience supporting surgical training, research, or technical service delivery
* Experience working with biological material or human cadavers
