Overview

To be an efficient and flexible member of the Cellular Pathology laboratory team providing a high quality diagnostic service through scientific and technical activities commensurate with the training and education of a Biomedical Scientist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

To maintain competence to practice and to improve professional expertise through engagement in Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

We are looking to recruit a state registered biomedical scientist to join our busy Cellular Pathology team based at Royal Wolverhampton New Cross Hospital which is part of the Black Country Pathology Services. This post is a permanent contract of 37.5 hours per week. We are a fully UKAS accredited, forward looking and dynamic department using modern equipment to deliver a quality routine and acute service to the Trust and surrounding GPs.

This post presents an opportunity to be part of an excellent team working in a busy and spacious hospital laboratory. You will carry out a wide variety of molecular techniques, including immunohistochemistry and frozen sections for WGS.

You should show evidence of continuing professional development and be able to demonstrate good planning, organisational and interpersonal skills as well as evidence of competence in problem solving and prioritising workloads. Excellent communication and multitasking skills are essential for this post.


Minimum Qualification Requirements

* BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences.
* Completed Generic portfolio Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS).
* Full state registration with HCPC.

Role Responsibilities

To participate in all technical and scientific aspects of the Cellular Pathology laboratory operation without supervision, as part of a team, under the direction of the Technical Services Manager ensuring compliance with Departmental Policies and Standard Operating procedures.

To prioritise and organise workload to ensure continuity and efficiency of service. Organise own work and ensure completion in a timely manner and to satisfactory Standards. Ensure that all procedures carried out in the laboratory contribute to high quality service provision.

Take part in the specimen entry process using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Ensure that all samples / request forms are correctly matched and fulfil the specimen acceptance criteria of the Department.

Ensure that laboratory records are maintained accurately and stored securely in line with the Standards issued by United Kingdom Accreditation service (UKAS) and the Human Tissue Authority (HTA). Participate in the laboratory preparation of tissue sections including microtomy. Perform routine Haematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining of prepared tissue sections as well as a variety of special staining techniques prior to slides being submitted for microscopic examination.

To participate in the provision of the immunocytochemistry service.
