Job overview
University Hospitals Sussex Neurosurgery/Spinal surgery service is looking to appoint a highly motivated Junior Clinical Fellow in Neurosurgery (ST4+ equivalent) to commence as soon as possible for six months to one year in the first instance, with a view to extending or progressing
South East Neurosurgery/Spinal surgery Unit is the Regional Centre for Neurosurgery and complex spinal surgery and provides a wide range of specialist adult services across the Sussex, Surrey and Kent region.
South East Neurosurgery/Spinal surgery Unit sits within the directorate of Neurosciences under the division of Specialist services. The unit consist of 9 Neurosurgical and 4 spinal consultants (with orthopaedic or neurosurgical training). The medical team consists of 10 registrars, 7 SHO level doctors, 1-2 Foundation year doctor(s) and 2 Advance Clinical Practitioners (ACP). There are 2 dedicated neurosurgical wards at the RSCH. In addition, there are a number of beds on critical care. The department is based in the new Louisa Martindale Building (3Ts) providing state of the art facilities including 3 dedicated neuro/spinal theatres with intra-operative MRI facilities, a brand new Neurointerventional angiography suite, O-arm, 3 Neuro-navigation systems, CT/MRI facilities near neuro-theatres and multiple MDT rooms.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicants will cover both elective and emergency adult neurosurgery and spinal conditions covering Registrar on calls, working on wards, theatres, ICU/HDU, outpatient clinics and the emergency department. The registrar on call rota is 1:10 and you will be working with a highly motivated theatre, nursing, therapy and pharmacy teams. This is an excellent opportunity for the middle grade doctors who aspire to complete neurosurgical training. All of our posts are well supported and closely supervised by consultants and the successful post holders will be assigned to an Educational and Clinical supervisor and will have regular career progress supervision. The trust strongly supports teaching and training and the post holders who will be at the level of taking the FRCS Neurosurgery exam will be closely guided.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
· Registrar on call duties- dealing with acute referrals to the department, and escalating as appropriate.
· Review of patients in our emergency department, and formulation of appropriate management plans.
· Weekly attendance to neurosurgical theatres, assisting and performing both cranial and spinal procedures according to level of competence, with appropriate consultant supervision
· Attendance at weekly departmental teaching
· Participation in clinical governance, including departmental/national audits, and quality improvement projects
· Attendance to outpatient departments and review of patients in clinic
· Training and supervision of junior colleagues
· Participation in the morning multidisciplinary board round, and communicating/liaising with allied healthcare professionals to ensure the highest levels of patient safety and care.

Experience/ Qualifications
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
* MRCS
* Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
* Distinctions, Scholarships prizes, other degrees e.g. BSc MSc, MS

* Previous neurosurgical experience up to, or above, the level of ST4+
* Understanding of clinical risk management
