The role will be conducted across the South Wales Police area in collaboration with the Police and Crime Commissioner. The application process and questions are set by the role specifications established by the Commissioner, with EYST supporting the recruitment.

Role Description
1. Arrange visits to custody with fellow visitors, in line with the rota, including some late nights and weekends. Minimum of 12 visits annually.
2. Inform the Scheme Manager and Panel Coordinator of any issues affecting your ability to carry out visits.
3. Conduct visits following scheme guidelines, recording visits accurately using the prescribed process.
4. Adhere to the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Volunteer Policy.
5. Check detainees' conditions, health, and rights, referencing the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE). This includes clarifying concerns, discussing issues with custody staff, and escalating matters as needed.
6. Complete and submit expense claims quarterly, with mileage aligned to HMRC guidance.
7. Attend ongoing professional development and at least two Panel Meetings annually.
8. Follow health and safety requirements and maintain confidentiality.
9. Update contact details and report any conflicts of interest promptly.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
1. At least 18 years old, of good character, passing vetting processes.
2. Reside, work, or study within the South Wales Police area.
3. Have resided in the UK for at least 3 years prior to application.
4. Flexible and able to dedicate time for visits and meetings.
5. Work well in a team, demonstrating reliability.
6. Follow scheme guidelines and code of conduct.
7. Effective communication skills with detainees, staff, and the public.
8. Maintain impartiality and independence.
9. Maintain confidentiality at all times.
10. Provide a valid email address for reports and expense submissions.
11. Access to transport or ability to reach custody locations.
12. Effective communication across diverse backgrounds, respecting equal opportunities.
13. Basic understanding of the role of an independent custody visitor.
Recruitment Process
Applicants will complete an application form, followed by shortlisting and an interview, which may be in person or via Microsoft Teams. Successful candidates will undergo reference checks, vetting, and training at South Wales Police Headquarters.
