You will be part of UCL's Centre for Advanced Research Computing (ARC). You will join the community ofstaff scientists and research technology professionals delivering the services and systems which make data and compute-intensive research possible. You will work within your team to support a wide portfolio of responsibilities.

Hours Monday - Friday, shifts to be confirmed. There may be a requirement to work evenings or weekends occassionally.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.


What you'll do at work

* Assist in designing, developing, enhancing and automating new computing and data infrastructures and related tools and services for use by researchers, including anything from high-performance and high-throughput parallel infrastructures to services for data management
* Support the operation of research platforms and tools, assisting colleagues from across the University with advice and help as needed, and recommending and implementing improvements based on user feedback
* Work closely as part of a team to develop bespoke, scalable, sustainable infrastructure and applications to support their projects
* Be engaged with learning new techniques to support projects and infrastructure
* You will take the time to grow, trying new things and building experience and knowledge of research infrastructure such as high-performance computing, cloud and data storage
* You will be an active citizen of the department, the university, contributing to and helping to organise discussions, build relationships, and share knowledge with colleagues
* You will learn and follow best practices for sustainable infrastructure and reproducible research. Ensuring that all activities are carried out with professionalism and care
* You will join the technical and intellectual development of ARC’s projects. We will work together to keep these appropriate to your skills and development needs, providing variety and opportunities for growth

You will also undertake at least one of:

* Provide assistance for first- or second-line support for ARC services and systems, including through drop-in sessions
* Engage with colleagues across UCL to ensure the smooth functioning of our activities
* Contribute to ARC teaching and training, e.g. through assisting tutors or preparing material

Training

Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

* Identify technical solutions using creative and critical thinking.

* Deploy and implement solutions, supporting change management practices.
* Create and maintain documentation in accordance with best practice and organisational requirements.
* Support multiple contemporary or legacy solutions to required levels of service.
* Apply organisational policies and legislation in relation to security requirements, privacy, and confidentiality.
* Communicate using a variety of tools and approaches, adapting language for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
* Apply continuous professional development CPD to support their own learning, business needs and technical developments.
* Work at any stage of the solution lifecycle.

Your training plan

Programme: IT Solutions Technician

During this apprenticeship, you will follow a fully supported training programme with LearnTech, delivered through combined weekly remote classroom-based training, workplace assessment/training and online learning working towards completing the IT Solutions Technician standard.

Requirements

GCSE in:

* 5 other subjects (grade 4 (C))
* Maths (grade 4 (C))

Other requirements

An assessment centre for this role will be held on Tuesday August 5th, followed by final stage interviews on Wednesday August 6th.It is a requirement to have seven GCSE 9-4 grades or equivalent (including English and Maths) to apply for this apprenticeship. If you do not have these grades but have completed numeracy and literacy Key Skills/Functional Skills at level two you may also apply for these apprenticeships.You must meet the following eligibility criteria to apply for the role: Have been a UK/EEA resident for the last 3 years, hold valid residency status and have the right to work in the UK.

Successful candidates will be employed on a 3-year fixed-term contract.
