Senior Clinical/Counselling Psychologist

Job type: Part-time (22.5 hours per week / 0.6 WTE). Based at Ash Tree Clinic, Harrow CAMHS. Working pattern: Monday to Friday 09:00–17:00 with some flexibility to meet service needs.

This role is to co-lead the multidisciplinary Learning Disabilities sub-team within the Harrow CAMH Service. The Learning Disabilities team provides psychological care to children and young people with moderate to severe learning disabilities who have co-occurring mental health and behavioural difficulties. The postholder will provide specialist psychological assessment, therapy, advice and consultation on children and young people’s psychological care, work autonomously within professional guidelines, and contribute to audit, policy and service development. The postholder will provide high-level clinical leadership to the LD team, in collaboration with the Consultant Psychiatrist co-lead, and develop opportunities to work with services involved in children and young people to co-produce creative activities and person-centred care plans.


Main duties

* Provide a highly specialist clinical psychology service to children with learning disabilities and their families across care settings, including assessment and therapy, and offer advice and consultation to non-psychologist colleagues and carers, working within the team’s policies and procedures.
* Utilise research skills for audit, policy, service development and research within the service area.
* Provide supervision and training within Clinical Psychology and the CAMHS LD Team and external partners.
* Liaise and consult with other health care professionals (e.g., Paediatricians, Physiotherapists, OT, Psychiatrists, Speech and Language Therapists, Educational Psychologists, Specialist Teachers, Children’s Social Care Workers, voluntary sector groups, etc.).


Qualifications and experience


Essential

* Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology or counselling psychology (BPS accredited) with models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuro-psychology, two or more psychological therapies, and lifespan development.
* HCPC Registration as Practitioner Psychologist: Clinical or Counselling Psychologist.
* Training in Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) or Applied Behaviour Analysis models.


Desirable

* Post-doctoral training in specialised areas relevant to complex CAMHS (e.g., Research, CYP-IAPT Therapy Training, CBT, ADOS-2).
* Recent safeguarding training; post-qualification supervision training.


Experience


Essential

* Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment across care settings (outpatient, community, primary care, inpatient).
* Experience with diverse client groups across the life course, including high-emotion contexts and risk.
* Experience with children and young people with learning disabilities and extreme challenging behaviours.


Desirable

* Experience in teaching, training and/or supervision; experience working with other agencies; applying clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.
* Experience providing adapted CBT and therapies to young people with autism and learning disabilities; experience working with interpreters.


Knowledge and skills


Essential

* Doctoral-level knowledge of clinical psychology, lifespan development, psychopathology, psychometrics and neuropsychology; proficiency in two or more therapies.
* Advanced psychological assessment and intervention skills for complex problems, including CBT-based approaches.
* Knowledge of CAMHS and the evidence base for working with children and young people; ability to formulate and communicate diagnoses and formulations clearly.
* Strong communication skills for interacting with clients, families and professionals; ability to provide consultation.
* Experience assessing mental health risk and safeguarding concerns.


Desirable

* Knowledge of specialised neuropsychological assessment and treatment for learners with disabilities; CAMHS legislation; and research methodology.
* Ability to teach/train using multimedia materials; experience planning and delivering group treatments.
