About The Role
Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisor to join our Power Transmission and Distribution Team on the Eastern Green Link 2 project in Hull.
EGL2 is a 505km electricity superhighway which will enable the transfer of power from Scotland to England (and vice versa as required) via a subsea cable. The two-gigawatt, high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable is connecting Peterhead in Aberdeenshire and Drax in North Yorkshire.
The HSW Advisor will support the project to drive HSW performance. They will ensure efficient and effective advice and support to meet operational requirements and enable the project to achieve our Zero Harm objectives.
What you'll be doing
* Ensure that HS&W objectives are embedded into projects and owned by line management
* Drive Safety, Health, Environmental & sustainability compliance across projects and provide high quality specialist support and advice directly to line management on how they should control HS&W risks.
* Support line management at meetings with Clients and providing information as required.
* Creating an open “challenging” culture of communication to facilitate learning, to motivate individuals and teams alike throughout all stages of the work process to support sustained HS&W improvements.
* Support delivery of the Behavioural Safety programme (e.g. Take Care / Making Safety Personal)
* Attend regular site meetings, investigations, internal meetings etc., to support the management teams in the delivery of outstanding HS&W performance.
* Provide support in specialist areas and to specialist groups such as Fatal Risk Groups, Work Instruction Committees, BMS Groups etc.
* Lead and provide advice to other advisers in specific specialist areas.
* Support line management in the development of local health, safety environmental and sustainability plans, training requirements and understanding of legal (both health & safety and environmental aspects).
* Liaise with regulators, clients and Balfour Beatty teams as required
* Keep up to date with changes to legislation and standards where applicable, recommend and develop changes to systems and processes
* Support business development activities by providing HS&W support and input into tender submissions
* Support and conduct site inspections, audit and assurance activities including facilitating external audits by clients and accreditation bodies as required.
* Support the development and implementation of new HS&W policies, processes, procedures and work instructions and their updating.
* Support the development and delivery of training and toolbox talks.
* Undertake a mixture of site visits, observation, 1:1 sessions, analysis of reports and data to identify areas to improve health, safety & environmental performance. Put forward recommendations for improvement.
* Assist in the identification of training needs, the development of training programme and/or change management programmes.
Who we're looking for
* Degree or post graduate qualification (or equivalent) in a health and safety or environmental related discipline (e.g.: NEBOSH/NCRQ Diploma in Health and Safety)
* Operational health & safety and/or environmental experience in a construction environment.
* Strong knowledge of electrical safety and working in either substation, cabling or overhead line environment.
* A strong communicator able to express clearly and succinctly ideas, plans and priorities to a wide audience and across all levels of the organisation.
* A confident and engaging individual, who can motivate others and who has strong influencing skills.
* An effective listener, able to quickly assess situations or problems and can demonstrate a flexible approach to problem solving.
* Strong analytical skills with excellent report writing and presentation skills.
* Responds well when working within a team or independently, and able to respond calmly and with empathy when working under conditions of continuing pressure and to deadlines to achieve the desired target and goals.
* Experience of conducting, accident / incident investigations and establishing root causes.
* Experience of undertaking risk based health & safety and/or environmental and/or quality inspections/ audits and producing reports of findings. Demonstrates drive and enthusiasm for the role, taking responsibility for their learning and development.
* Strong IT Skills (Outlook, Word Excel, PowerPoint).
* Good depth of knowledge in health & safety law, environmental law & ecological matters.
* Willing & able to travel across England and Wales. Work away from home and work independently without direct supervision.
* Full driving licence
