Hydrology Officer
The role of a Hydrology officer contributes to managing our water resources, responding to environmental incidents, and managing the risk of flooding. Your responsibilities will be varied and always rewarding as you work with the full range of hydrological conditions, covering both high and low flows.
Day‑to‑day tasks include
* Provide hydrological data, information and support for both internal and external stakeholders.
* Assist with monitoring, reporting and analysing the state of the hydrological environment, including the production of regular water situation summaries and ad hoc reports.
* Contribute to maintaining our hydrometric data quality, working with the team to improve hydrological data and meet key performance indicators.
* Work closely with other team members to deliver hydrological analysis and interpretation across the full flow range from drought to flood.
* Participate in monitoring catchment response to support permitting decisions and water resource management.
* Provide technical information to communities and partners, tailoring communications to varying technical capabilities.
* Support incident response by delivering timely, accurate analysis and interpretation of catchment response.
Team
The Hydrology and Water and Metal Mines team is multifunctional. The team includes a Technical Specialist and a Technical Officer who support your training and development. The Water and Metal Mines section of the team delivers the mine water project to clean rivers polluted by metals from abandoned mines.
Experience & skills required
You will be a competent and experienced person who is versatile, self‑motivated and can quickly fit in and contribute to the work of our busy team.
* Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
* Experience in the analysis and reporting of hydrological data and information.
* Proven ability with: data information and management; hydrometric data quality assurance; basic statistics and graphics to determine trends and relationships; GIS or other mapping software.
* Excellent communication skills, confident use of IT, and passion for analysis and problem solving.
* Ability to work well in a team and independently manage workload.
Location & working patterns
Base – Tyneside House, Newcastle. Flexible working patterns are welcomed, including job share.
