We are looking for a candidate to take on a dual role to support the delivery of domiciliary optical services by assisting our team of optometrists during home and care-home visits, while also providing efficient office-based cover and administrative support to ensure smooth day-to-day operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Domiciliary Optical Assistant Duties
* Assist the optometrist during domiciliary eye examinations in patients' homes and care settings
* Prepare, transport, and set up optical equipment safely and efficiently
* Support patients before, during, and after examinations, ensuring comfort and dignity at all times
* Assist with frame selection, basic adjustments, and dispensing advice as directed
* Maintain accurate patient records in line with clinical and data protection requirements
* Ensure infection control, health & safety, and safeguarding procedures are followed
* Handle spectacles and orders carefully and accurately
* Represent the practice professionally when visiting patients and care providers
Office Administration Duties
* Answer telephone calls and emails professionally and promptly
* Book and manage appointments, including domiciliary visit schedules and routes
* Maintain patient records, files, and databases accurately
* Process orders, invoices, and basic financial administration as required supporting the current office administrator team
* Liaise with care homes, patients, relatives, suppliers, and clinicians
* Support stock control and ordering of optical and office supplies
* Assist with compliance documentation and audit preparation
* General administrative duties to support the smooth running of the practice
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* Caring, patient-focused approach with sensitivity to elderly and vulnerable individuals
* Strong organisational and time-management skills
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Good IT skills, including use of practice management systems and Microsoft Office
* Attention to detail and high levels of accuracy
* Full UK driving licence
* Flexible and reliable, with a professional appearance and manner
Desirable Criteria
* Previous experience as an Optical Assistant or in an optical practice
* Experience in domiciliary, healthcare, care home, or community-based services
* Knowledge of GOS regulations and basic dispensing principles
* Customer service or administrative experience in a healthcare setting
