An opportunity has arisen in the KCC Highway Structures team for an ambitious, talented, and experienced Chartered Civil/Structural Engineer who is eager to demonstrate leadership and project delivery skills. The ideal candidate will have experience with highway structures such as bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and reinforced earthworks, and a desire to pass on this knowledge to others.
Kent County Council manages a highway network of 8,700 km, which is its most valuable asset. The Highway Structures team oversees approximately 1,100 bridges and viaducts, 570 large culverts, 450 other structures (including retaining walls, underpasses, and gantries), and 2 tunnels. The team is also responsible for over 250 km of safety barriers.
The successful candidate will ensure scheme delivery within specified timeframes, budgets, and quality standards by collaborating with our supply chain. A risk-based approach to prioritization and openness to innovative delivery methods are essential.

About You
The Principal Engineer role is a KR12 grade. We are recruiting for a full-time position but are open to flexible working arrangements, including job shares, term-time only, staggered hours, and hybrid working. Please specify your preferred working pattern in your application. The role is based in Ashford, Kent, with flexible working from home when not on site or in the office.
The post holder will provide technical advice and manage projects, including:
1. Reviewing designs for compliance with standards, legislation, and stakeholder requirements;
2. Ensuring compliance with legislation such as the Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015;
3. Supporting junior team members to enhance their technical skills and promote an intelligent client approach within structures;
4. Undertaking construction audits and reviewing compliance with designs;
5. Preparing briefs for NEC3 framework consultants and other service providers and managing these work packages;
6. Deputising for the Team Leader as required;
7. Identifying best practices and collaborating to develop KCC policies, emphasizing innovative and sustainable practices.
