Specialist Neuro-Occupational Therapist role at Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust
Job Summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Barnet Early Stroke Discharge (ESD) Team, working with an MDT including other occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists, speech and language therapists and rehabilitation assistants. The post will have a role in developing the occupational therapy practice and delivering evidence-based Early Stroke Discharge rehabilitation packages for people returning home after initial treatment in hyper-acute, acute and tertiary stroke units serving the Barnet locality. The ESD team works as part of Inpatients and Stroke Services pathway and has a role to in-reach into acute units to provide advice and support to stroke patients, carers and referring therapists. You should have 2 years of experience including working with stroke or patients with a neurological condition. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a positive and innovative approach to service development and a commitment to multidisciplinary team working/skill sharing. Hold a full, valid UK driving licence and have access to a car to use for business purposes (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010).
Responsibilities
* Provide an early comprehensive specialist stroke service to residents of Barnet requiring rehabilitation in the community and manage student/junior occupational therapists and other support staff.
* Be an active member of the clinical team, delivering a comprehensive occupational therapy service within the Early Stroke Discharge team.
* Perform occupational therapy assessments of patients with neurological presentations to develop and deliver individualized treatment programs.
* Work within professional standards and clinical guidelines, promote best practice and undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner, including assessing, treating, and managing own caseload and maintaining professional documentation.
* Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to facilitate positive rehab outcomes, timely and coordinated discharge planning.
* Work in a variety of settings including clients’ homes, clinics, residential and care homes, community facilities, continuing care homes and community hospitals.
* Supervise and line-manage junior staff, rehabilitation assistants, technical instructors and occupational therapy students.
* Support service development through active participation in continuing professional development (CPD).
Qualifications
Essential
* Diploma/degree in Occupational Therapy
* Current HCPC registration
* Current COT registration
* Evidence of CPD relevant to assessment and treatment of neurological conditions
* Evidence of up-to-date CPD portfolio
* Involvement in Appraisal and KSF Scheme
Desirable
* Member of other relevant special interest groups
* Other relevant postgraduate degree
Experience
Essential
* Post-registration experience of 2 years working (including falls, neuro or stroke rehabilitation, and long-term disability management).
* Post-registration experience of facilitating hospital discharges
* Experience working within a multidisciplinary team
* Experience working with Social Services
Desirable
* Post-registration experience of working in a community rehabilitation setting
* Rotations at a Band 5 level in a wide range of clinical areas including elderly care, neuro-rehabilitation, musculoskeletal, community and orthopaedics
* Experience in supervising and appraising junior therapists or support workers
* Experience in supervising occupational therapy students
* Experience in service development projects
* Experience working with voluntary organisations
Skills & Knowledge
Essential
* Experience and skills to assess and treat people with neurological conditions, complex multisystem presentations (including cognitive communication deficits, spasticity, splinting and casting, NMES, vocational rehab)
* Knowledge of national guidelines for stroke rehabilitation, NSFs for Older People and Long-Term Conditions and relevant NICE guidelines
* Knowledge of the neurorehabilitation process
* Ability to apply core occupational therapy skills across a range of clinical conditions in a client-centered, goal-setting approach
* Knowledge of outcome measures and evidence-based practice related to stroke and neurorehabilitation
* Clinical reasoning, prioritisation and problem-solving abilities
* Communication and report-writing skills (verbal and written)
* IT skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook) and understanding of Clinical Governance
* Understanding of involving service users in treatment and service development
* Stays up-to-date with own professional practice and new research
Desirable
* Postgraduate qualifications in additional therapy modalities (e.g., spasticity management, splinting and casting, NMES, cognitive communication deficits)
