Primary SEMH Teaching Assistant – Location: Bridport, Dorset • Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday • Pay: £89 – £95 per day • Start Date: ASAP
About the role
We are seeking a dedicated SEND Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming primary school in Bridport. This full-time role is based in Key Stage 1 and involves providing 1:1 support for pupils with additional needs, particularly those with social, emotional and mental health challenges. The successful candidate will play an important role in helping pupils feel safe, supported, and ready to learn – making a real difference to their progress and wellbeing.
Key responsibilities
* Working directly with pupils with a range of SEND, with a focus on SEMH and attachment needs
* Supporting the delivery of tailored learning plans under the guidance of the class teacher
* Encouraging engagement in lessons and building confidence within the classroom
* Promoting positive social skills and peer relationships
* Recording pupil progress and sharing information with staff and parents where needed
* Using positive behaviour management strategies and de-escalation techniques
* Preparing resources and activities to meet individual needs
* Taking part in ongoing training to develop your knowledge of SEND support
About you
* Experienced in a classroom setting – this is essential for the role
* Confident in working with children who have additional needs
* Knowledgeable about trauma and attachment and their impact on behaviour and learning
* A good communicator, able to work well with staff, pupils, and parents
* Patient, empathetic, and resilient, with a genuine commitment to helping children succeed
* Able to work independently as well as part of a team
* Holder of an Enhanced DBS check (or willing to obtain one)
* A driver – this would be an advantage due to the school’s location and to support flexibility
