The main role of the SGB2 grade is to prepare their court, escort the judge to/from court and attend to the judge’s requirements in court. SGB2’s assist in ensuring their court is conducted in an orderly manner, working closely with the Clerk, Police Officer and GeoAmey to ensure the decorum and efficiency of the court is maintained. They are responsible for productions in court and they also collect witnesses from the witness rooms and bring them into court.

The primary duties involve court preparation, escorting the judge, managing court decorum, and supporting the judge and court staff in handling court productions, witnesses and related tasks.
Responsibilities
* Setting up of Court, including charge of paper and electronic productions and labels
* Collection of and putting out the Judge’s bag
* Calling cases using the public address system
* Maintaining the Judge(s) notebooks and connecting laptop on bench
* Presenting list of day’s witnesses to reception
* Attending upon the Judge(s) for robing
* Escorting the Judge(s) to and from Court
* Managing and presenting witnesses
* Managing jurors
* Operation of the Court Evidence Presentation system
* Retrieving and returning case papers from the Offices of Court
* Support the process of taking evidence on commission
* Travelling on circuit
* Introductory and health & safety briefings to new jurors
* Maintaining the integrity of the jury and acting as escort
* Liaising with Depute Clerk regarding any queries from jurors
* Preparing and clearing the jury room each sitting day, including setting out and locking away jury folders
* Delivering next day’s menu choice to reception
* Stamping citations and informing reception of any juror absence for electronic recording
* Accompanying Jurors to outside areas at breaks, lunch hour and end of day’s business
* Handing out individual security cards to jurors at end of day’s business
* Receiving and distributing external mail
* Providing internal mail services by collecting and delivering mail from and to designated points
* Sorting mail for collection by external delivery agencies
* Assisting the receptionist by directing and escorting solicitors, witnesses, jurors, parties, etc to the appropriate location within the buildings
* Light lifting and carrying
* Uplifting confidential waste
* Lighting the fires in Parliament Hall
* Securely and reliably collect/deliver Judges Bags to/from their home address and the Supreme Court each day
* Make sure Judges Court papers and mail are put into the correct bag for delivery
* Responsible for the deposit of bag service keys in the safe box after each bag run
* Undertake such duties as may reasonably be requested within the scope of the post.

Event, timetable and application information
Open evening for prospective candidates: Wednesday 8 October 2025 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at Supreme Courts, Parliament House (Door 11), Parliament Square, Edinburgh, EH1 1RQ. There will be informal presentations at 6:15 and 7:15 in relation to the role and its responsibilities. This event will allow candidates to meet some of the team, discuss the role in more detail, and ask any questions. Colleagues from the Recruitment Team will also be on hand for recruitment related questions.
