Appointment of Cemeteries Operative
Full Time- 37 Hours per week
Salary Scale SCP: 13 to 17 (£29,064 to £31,022 per annum)
Plus Local Government Average Salary Pension Scheme
Bridgwater Town Council is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Cemeteries Operative to join our team. This role is integral to the care, maintenance, and operation of our cemeteries, ensuring they remain places of dignity, respect, and reflection for the community.
The Cemeteries Operative will carry out a wide range of duties, including grounds maintenance, preparation of graves, assisting with funeral arrangements, and ensuring the cemeteries are kept to a high standard of presentation at all times.
We welcome applications from individuals with transferable skills such as plant machinery operation, grounds maintenance experience, or horticultural knowledge, even if you have not previously worked in a cemetery environment.
Key Responsibilities
· Prepare and maintain graves and memorial plots in accordance with health and safety regulations.
· Carry out routine grounds maintenance, including grass cutting, hedge trimming, planting, and litter collection.
· Support funeral services by ensuring burial areas are prepared, dignified, and accessible.
· Undertake general repairs, inspections, and upkeep of cemetery buildings, boundaries, and pathways.
· Provide respectful assistance to members of the public, funeral directors, and clergy as required.
· Record and report maintenance requirements, incidents, or safety concerns.
· Operate and maintain tools, equipment, and machinery safely and effectively.
· Ensure all work is undertaken in compliance with relevant legislation, health and safety procedures, and Council policies.
