Closing Date: 08 March 2026 About the role We are seeking to appoint a Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst to join our BI, Analytics & Insights team, within Strategic Planning & Change at Newcastle University. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of university-wide business intelligence, and to help shape how data and insight are used to inform strategic decision-making across the institution. You will work with a rich and complex range of higher education data — including student, research, staff, financial and external benchmarking information — and collaborate with colleagues across the University to understand business needs and deliver high-quality analytical products. This will include the design and delivery of dashboards, reports and modelling tools to support strategic planning, performance monitoring and change initiatives. Acting as a specialist in business intelligence and analytics, you will provide trusted insight to senior leaders, helping them interpret complex data and use it to drive evidence-based decisions. You will also play an important role in contributing to data quality improvements and the development of data governance best practice across the institution. This is a full-time permanent position. About you You will have proven professional experience in a relevant analytical, business intelligence or data-focused role, ideally within a large and complex organisation. You will bring strong skills in data visualisation, analysis and statistics alongside a keen interest in data governance and experience of working to improve data quality. Crucially, you will be confident working with complex datasets and communicating insight clearly to senior audiences, helping translate analysis into actionable recommendations. We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who are curious, collaborative and passionate about using data to support better decision-making. Key Accountabilities • Design and deliver automated strategy and management information dashboards in the University Strategic Insights Portal to provide relevant, timely, accurate, and high-quality information and insights to senior management • Undertake regular reviews of institutional reporting dashboards with key users and work with colleagues in distributed teams to deliver continuous improvements to data quality and analysis and insight provision • Deliver institutional data analysis, modelling and visualisation projects to enhance the availability and accessibility of critical information and insight aligned to university priorities • Contribute to the design and delivery of a suite of training on dashboard and insights use to advance institutional data literacy and facilitate data-informed decision-making • Working with colleagues across the University to understand their needs, actively identify and promote best-practice ways to analyse and visualise information and deliver trusted insights • Prepare institutional strategic insight reports, analysing and interpreting key information to provide reasoned insight and evidence-based recommendations as required for a range of stakeholders • Develop key information and reporting tools to streamline and automate strategic and operational management information provision and data quality review across the university • Work in partnership with data and system owners and the Office of the Chief Technology Officer to identify improvements/requirements to inform future-state data models and support the development and maintenance of an institutional enterprise data dictionary and agreed metric definitions • Promote good data practice and ensure compliance of BI dashboards, reports and ad hoc projects with agreed reporting standards. Promote use of the standards across the university analytics and insights community • Play an active role in the Analytics & Insights Community across the organisation, enhancing knowledge and understanding of data governance and delivering improvements to data literacy across the organisation The Person Knowledge, Skills and Experience • Experience of providing information, insights, and recommendations for internal customers • Significant experience with visualisation software such as Power BI and knowledge of statistical or programming languages such as Python or R • Experience of producing reports and communicating complex issues and data to a range of stakeholders in an accessible and inclusive manner • Experience of designing and delivering dashboards and strategic analysis • Demonstrable vocational experience in statistical analysis and data visualisation, working with large relational datasets • Knowledge and understanding of good data governance, data quality, data protection practices and information security, data-related regulatory requirements, and emerging issues and trends • Excellent interpersonal skills, including negotiating, influencing and relationship building, with demonstrable experience of working collaboratively with multiple distributed teams • Knowledge of strategic analysis such as predictive analytics, scenario modelling, or trade-offs Attributes and Behaviour • Confidence and belief in evidence-based data analysis, highlighting trends and patterns in data and challenging assumptions, beliefs and decisions with clear arguments and perspectives, including in situations where the data and insights are challenged • Strong attention to detail, spotting errors and ensuring accurate information. Uses systems and tools to ensure records and audit trails are clear and up-to-date and ensures others are aware of how process and systems work • Team-worker who builds effective relationships with colleagues in distributed roles across the organisation • Excellent communicator with well-developed interpersonal and verbal, written and presentation communication style and approach • A proven ability to work independently and use initiative to develop innovative and effective solutions to complex problems • Able to work under pressure in a planned and structured way to effectively deliver high quality products to time.
