Principal Treatment Superintendent
The postholder will act as the lead senior clinical specialist in Radiotherapy Treatment Service Delivery, taking overall responsibility for the supervision of the Radiotherapy Treatment machines (Linear Accelerators & Superficial Unit) and Brachytherapy. The role requires working closely with the Radiotherapy Service Manager and Team Leaders to ensure safe and efficient use of resources across the service.
The postholder will provide a leadership focus within the Treatment Section of the Radiotherapy Department, deputising for the Radiotherapy Service Manager as necessary.
Main duties
- Take operational responsibility for the Treatment area on a daily basis and line‑manage the Team Leaders within the Treatment area, including all related HR tasks.
- Collaborate with the Radiotherapy Service Manager, Consultant Clinical Oncologists, Team Leaders in the Pre‑Treatment & Treatment areas, Radiotherapy Physics, Senior Managers and radiographers to maintain and develop a high‑quality radiotherapy service.
- Play a key role in service development, identifying and leading on processes, equipment and facilities required for changes to service delivery; communicate closely with the Radiotherapy Service Manager on all issues relating to Radiotherapy Treatment.
- Contribute to overall radiotherapy service strategies and, on occasions, lead national discussions on the direction and development of radiotherapy services in the area of specialty.
Qualifications
- DCR(T) or BSc in Radiotherapy and Oncology
- MSc in a related subject or progressing towards one
- HCPC registration
- Management Qualification
- Trained Appraiser and Recruiter
Experience
- Significant post‑qualification clinical experience in radiotherapy, with experience at Band 7 or above.
- Evidence of leadership skills.
- Understanding of clinical governance and risk management.
- Broad, specialised knowledge of all aspects of the radiotherapy service.
- Trained Investigating Officer.
- Risk assessment qualification / course.
Skills
- Advanced communication skills.
- Ability to plan, manage and prioritise own workload and that of the treatment area.
- Experience as a line manager, able to provide advice and support to other staff.
- Ability to lead and manage service changes in the treatment area.
- Experience of conflict resolution – managing patient concerns and complaints.
