All our students have either complex medical needs, profound and multiple learning difficulties or autism spectrum conditions. Our dedicated and talented staff are exceptional in managing their needs and developing their potential. Students are day-attendees and there is a Local Authority residential unit attached to the school, providing regular respite care for some of our students and which is an integral part of the school’s organisation.

Our Designated Safeguard Lead will provide leadership and management for the delivery and implementation of robust child protection and safeguarding procedures across the School, Sixth form and Residence for all pupils and staff. You will work with internal stakeholders, and outside agencies to ensure that all relevant policies and procedures are adhered to, improved upon and that positive safeguarding outcomes are implemented for the benefit of pupils, families/carers and staff.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

* A passion for, and knowledge of SEND in an education and social care setting.
* A good standard of education including passes in English and Maths GCSE (or equivalent).
* Significant experience of working with children and families in a safeguarding and child protection.
* environment as well as experience of working with multi agency professionals.
* A practical knowledge of the referral process and demonstrated delivery of positive safeguarding outcomes.
* Experience of managing staff.
* A genuine ability to engage with and influence all stakeholder.
* A commitment to drive continuous improvement in safeguarding, including staff training and policy and process review and development.
* A childcare qualification e.g. NVQ or Diploma level 3 in Care of Children and Young people, Social Care Pathways or Residential Childcare would be desirable but not essential.
* High degree of confidentiality

In return we can offer you:

* The chance to join a well-respected school in the heart of the local community.
* To work in a welcoming inclusive environment with inspiring children and young people and be part of a friendly, skilled and passionate team that is well supported by our committed board of governors.

If you are ready for a new challenge and to take the next step on your career path, we would love to hear from you. Informal visits are encouraged and can be arranged by prior appointment.

The school and residence are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all its staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a self-declaration of their criminal record or information that would make them unsuitable to work with children. In addition, an online search will be conducted.

You must be able to explain any gaps in your employment/education history and you must have a legal right to work in the UK. Appointments will be subject to satisfactory disclosure checks at enhanced level by the Disclosure and Barring Service as well as other background checks including professional references.

We comply with all the principles of safer recruitment as outlined in the DfE document Keeping Children Safe in Education.

Further information about our commitment to safeguarding can be found in our Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy, available in the policies section of our website www.kingsmillschool.co.uk

Online applications close on 12 April. Applications will be received at the school up until 9am on 13 April.

If you already work for the council and have previously used an Employee Self Service (ESS) account, to login to apply online, from September 2025 you will need to create a new account using your personal email address.

This school does not have the resources to send individual notifications to all applicants who are not shortlisted so if you have not been contacted within 2 weeks of the closing date you should assume you have been unsuccessful.

If selected for interview, an online search will be conducted for candidates. This is in line with KCSiE 2022.

DBS/Medical check

This post is subject to an enhanced DBS clearance check. The school is committed to safeguarding children and promoting their welfare. All members of staff are expected to share this commitment.
