Research Registrar in Trauma and Vascular Surgery

Main duties of the job
LeedsVascular Institute (Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust) is a thriving busyvascular surgery department and in addition the Vascular Surgeons participatein the Major Trauma Centre team. The applicant should therefore hold ATLS or anequivalent qualification. The successfulcandidates will have the opportunity to participate in a research project thataligns with unit interests in Aortic disease, CLTI, Diabetic Foot, Globalhealth, and Translational basic science, working within the NIHR BRC and MedTechinfrastructure in Leeds.

Job responsibilities
DUTIESOF THE POST
Thepost of Clinical Research Fellow in Vascular and Trauma Surgery is for 1year, with a view to further extension by mutual agreement, allocated to theLeeds Vascular Institute. The postholder will be engaged in a vascular research project with a view tosubmitting the work for a higher degree (MSc/MD/PhD). Vascular surgery isembedded within internationally recognised research infrastructure at theUniversity of Leeds including the Leeds NIHR BRC, NIHR Surgical MedTech MIC,RCS Clinical Trials Unit and BHF training centre. Currently, we have projectswhich encompass clinical vascular research as well as laboratory-basedstudies in a range of subjects including the cell biology of vasculardisease, biomarkers of plaque stability, and vascular tissue engineering andregenerative medicine. You will join a team of 1 ACL, 3 ACFs, 1 AFP and 2trust research fellows. In addition to the research work, there are alsoclinical duties which include a day-case operating list and outpatientclinics. The post holder will alsoparticipate in the vascular and major trauma surgical StR acute out of hoursrota.
Thesuccessful candidate will be carefully supervised by Associate Professor DRussell, Mr T Wallace, Mr P Coughlin or Associate Professor M Bailey in allaspects of the clinical and laboratory research work, and in addition, have asenior (Professor or Associate Professor in the University of Leeds)non-clinical co-supervisor based throughout their project. There are regularresearch meetings at which the work in progress is carefully evaluated andthis also serves as a problem-solving forum. The Trust Doctor is activelyencouraged to present their work at local, national and internationalmeetings and it is expected that the research work is submitted topeer-reviewed journals. PreviousVascular Research Fellow post holders have been successful in being awardedeither an MD or PhD Degree by the University of Leeds and it is expected thatthe current incumbent would also submit his/her work for such a higherdegree. The unit has an excellent track record of research fellows obtainingnational training numbers in surgery, and most recently in the new separatevascular surgical speciality.
Inaddition to the research aspects of the post, the post holder is alsoafforded the opportunity to improve their clinical experience in the form ofelective day-case surgery, and seeing patients in the clinic andparticipating in the vascular surgical and major trauma acute out of hoursrota.

Ward management
Operating theatre and outpatients
Emergency assessment of vascular and resuscitative major trauma patients
Diabetic foot clinics
Post-operative intensive care reviews
Discussions with relatives

* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* MRCS or equivalent
* ATLS

Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
* Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date
* Eligibility to work in the UK
* Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date
* Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs
* All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
* Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice)
Additional Requirements

Clinical Experience and Career Progression
* 24 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice
* Evidence of achievement of CST competencies in surgery (as defined by the curricula relating to Core Surgical Training)
