Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician

Job overview

The successful applicants will work in all areas of our busy pharmacy department in both acute and specialty settings. They will join a team of over 450 committed staff helping to ensure patients receive the best pharmaceutical care available.

A Pre-registration trainee pharmacy technician apprentice is employed on a fixed term Apprentice Agreement for 24 months. This contract is designed to provide a set of competencies, work experience and a qualification that could lead to employment within the pharmaceutical sector. Last year over 90% of apprentices completing apprenticeships with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals went on to work with us. The skills developed will support ongoing career progression.

You will complete a 24 month training program and study the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians.

The apprenticeship will be undertaken in collaboration with Bradford College on a day release basis over 2 years. There will be virtual classroom sessions taught by college tutors and workplace specialists.

You must also complete a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate learning and skills in practice in accordance with the apprenticeship framework.


Main duties of the job

Working under the direction of registered Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians within multidisciplinary teams, Pre-registration trainee pharmacy technician apprentices will assist in the provision and preparation of medicines to meet the needs of all patients.

Through your working practices you will apply respect and confidentiality, work well in a team, be courteous and professional, maintain a safe working environment, contribute to safeguarding patients and work accurately when preparing and dispensing medicines.

You will need to be hard working and an excellent team worker. Good communication is essential. You must also be able to recognise and work within your own limitations.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of 24 months due to this being an apprenticeship/training programme. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts.

A learner/applicant must be a UK, EEA, or EU resident for at least the past three years to undertake an apprenticeship training programme.

The apprentice allowance as specified in the Minimum Wage Regulations will be paid for the first 12 months. The rate will increase after 12 months in line with these regulations for anyone that is age 19 or over.

Person specification


Education and Qualifications

* 3 GCSEs – Grade 4/C or above to include Maths, English, and another subject or equivalent qualifications
* GCSE Science Grade 4/C or above, or equivalent such as BTEC Level 2 certificate in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Assistants, with relevant experience. Those with this equivalent qualification must pass a science assessment before starting the apprenticeship.


Experience & Knowledge

* Must have been a UK, EEA, or EU resident for at least the past three years to undertake this training programme.
* Previous experience working in hospital or community pharmacy
* Previous experience of a learning environment
* Awareness of health and safety/risk management issues


Skills & Abilities

* Good IT and keyboard skills
* Understanding of scientific principles
* Ability to work accurately


Personal Qualities

* Willingness to learn and ability to reflect
* Ability to self-organise
* Ability to work under pressure
* Ability to prioritise
* Ability to work across sites and organisations
