Overview
Saab UK is part of Scandinavia's largest defence company, providing world‑leading solutions and services in defence, aviation, space, and civil security. With over 600 employees across eight UK sites, we specialise in software engineering, underwater robotics, radars, AI, and armed forces training.
Role
This position is part of Saab BlueBear in Bedfordshire and involves working with the Air Combat Simulation team to support customers in modelling and simulation of aircraft and associated systems, including the development and V&V of models and analysis tools.
Key Responsibilities
* Collaborate as part of a small team to deliver customer‑focused, task‑based modelling and simulation support.
* Develop requirements from initial customer brief.
* Build models and analysis tools to meet customer requirements.
* Update, debug, and V&V models and simulation tools.
* Analyse results from model integration and simulation development to understand component model performance and interactions.
* Develop and maintain data‑translation tools between community file formats.
* Create Simulink models of aircraft and aerospace systems and auto‑code to C/C++ and DLL.
* Integrate Simulink models and DLLs into System‑of‑Systems models.
* Conduct simulation development, testing, and application with results analysis to understand component models and interactions.
* Develop and test models for integration into Distributed Simulations.
* Extend Distributed Simulation capabilities and functionality.
* Sanity‑check model performance and simulation results through cross‑checking with other sources and engineering estimates.
* Validate and verify model performance and simulation results against requirements.
* Review documentation for accurate technical content and quality to meet high standards.
* Investigate modelling and simulation tools to support new customer requirements.
* Generate documentation (User Guides, Interface Control Documents, Delivery Notes, Verification and Validation reports) for models, simulations and applications developed by the team at an appropriate level for the expected end user’s technical ability.
* Report on technical issues encountered with third‑party provided models and simulations, describing significance and potential resolutions.
Qualifications and Skills
* UK nationality required.
* Degree in engineering (or related subject).
* Experience with Matlab, Simulink (including Stateflow), and auto‑coding to C/C++ and DLL.
* Programming skills in C++, C#, and Delphi.
* Knowledge of flight dynamics and aircraft performance modelling.
* Experience with pilot modelling.
* Experience modelling sensors and signatures (RF and EO/IR).
* Knowledge of Earth coordinate systems (flat, spherical, WGS‑84).
* Experience with Distributed Simulation (DIS, HLA).
* Proficiency with source control (Git).
* Ability to solve optimisation problems.
* Experience integrating models into system‑of‑systems models and distributed simulations.
* Experience with flight performance, multi-degree‑of‑freedom equations of motion, and frame‑of‑reference transformations using Euler angles and quaternions.
* Experience with sensor and signature modelling.
* Experience diagnosing and resolving Simulink model development problems.
* Ability to integrate models into system‑of‑systems models and distributed simulations.
* National Security Vetting clearance to SC level required, or ability to obtain it.
Benefits and Reporting
As part of the Boss UK team, you will report to the Air Combat Simulation Lead and work in a collaborative environment with opportunities for professional growth within a leading defence and security organisation.
