IP work across all of Diageo's critical Global Whisk(e)ys brands and support colleagues within the global IP & Innovation function as required. In addition, assist the broader Legal Department and the Regional & Global Whisk(e)y Teams to meet business objectives.
Market Complexity:
Primary support will be provided to Diageo's Global Whisk(e)ys brand and innovation teams. This role requires understanding of the broader Scotch agenda as defined by the Scotch Whisky Association, and applying this knowledge to help the business navigate restrictions presented by the Scotch Whisky Regulations and Geographical Indication. Scotch Whisky is a key beverage category with a challenging innovation agenda and global marketing campaigns.
The role involves supporting the execution of global initiatives across diverse regions, coordinating IP clearance, registration, management, enforcement, and renewal of Whiskey brands in various markets. It may also provide IP support to the Breakthrough Innovation, M&A, and Brand Protection teams. The markets involved often have complex IP registries requiring skill and tenacity to navigate.
Purpose of Role:
Collaborate within a team including the General Counsel Global IP, Senior Counsels, IP Counsels, Trade Mark Attorney, and other IP Paralegals. Manage a significant portfolio to deliver high-quality, commercially oriented IP legal services to Diageo and the Whisk(e)y marketing and innovation functions.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Participating as a team member delivering world-class IP legal services.
2. Assisting with trademark clearance, prosecution, registration, conflicts, and renewals, including conducting searches, analyzing results, filing applications, and handling opposition proceedings.
3. Handling data input and liaising with external agents and counsel.
4. Reviewing and approving packaging and marketing materials.
5. Assisting with IP litigation where necessary.
6. Optimizing legal costs by efficient use of resources.
Requirements include a solid IP foundation with 12-18 months of experience, a law degree or Chartered Trade Mark Attorney qualification (advantageous), experience with multi-jurisdictional portfolios, and knowledge of trade mark law. Computer skills, flexibility, analytical ability, strong communication, professionalism, cultural sensitivity, and accountability are essential. Flexibility in work hours and location is encouraged.
