Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a 0.8 WTE qualified Psychological Therapist to join the Integrated Group Therapies Service at Broadmoor Hospital. The post holder will have a recognised qualification as an accredited Psychological Therapist, within a specialised modality including; CBT, Art Therapy, Dramatherapy and Dance Movement Psychotherapy. We are seeking applicants who have experience working in forensic psychiatric services and who hold an accreditation with their professional association. The post will be based within the Integrated Group Therapies Service at Broadmoor Hospital, which provides a comprehensive group and individual therapy service to patients across the hospital. The team is multi professional, with colleagues from a variety of professional backgrounds, including Psychology, Nurse Therapy, Art therapy, Dramatherapy and Dance Movement Therapy.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will offer group and individual interventions to service users in the hospital. In addition to direct clinical work you will support the wider team to work with service users e.g. through formulation.

You will liaise with other professionals both in the psychological service and in the wider hospital. You will be line managed by the Lead Psychologist for the groupwork service and supported by a structure of meetings with colleagues and clinical supervision.

All psychological therapists are active in developing the evidence base for their work through the use of outcome measures, clinical audit and research.

This is a permanent position 0.8 WTE of an agenda for change band 7 therapy post.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Postgraduate training in a relevant and accredited psychotherapy or a Registered Psychologist. For example, An accredited psychological therapist with a professional organisation such as, BABCP, BACP, BPS, BAMT, BAAT
2. Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council or Professional Accredited Body

Desirable criteria

3. Relevant specialist training in relation to working with challenging behaviour, offending behaviour, culture & diversity needs. Experience of working in an in-patient environment Training in another psychological therapy modality

Experience

Essential criteria

4. Experience of at least 6 months work in either a severe and enduring mental disorder or a forensic setting either in a qualified capacity, as a training placement.
5. Experience of working in groups
6. Experience of the application of Psychotherapy in different cultural contexts and working within a multicultural framework and context

Desirable criteria

7. Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

8. Highly developed specialist knowledge, both theoretical and practical, of psychology applied to clinical practice, particularly in respect of adults with severe and enduring mental health disorders (including personality disorders)
9. Theoretical knowledge of your area of psychological expertise and how this translates to working with individuals with complex mental health needs including their experiences of trauma
10. Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable criteria

11. Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of your specialist area of psychotherapy / psychology as applied to forensic issues
12. Knowledge of relevant legislation and its implications for work with mentally disordered offenders

Skills

Essential criteria

13. Able to complete satisfactorily breakaway and Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA) training
14. Able to provide and receive highly complex, highly sensitive or highly contentious information, where there are significant barriers to acceptance which need to be overcome using the highest level of interpersonal and communication skills such as would be required when communicating in a hostile, antagonistic or highly emotive atmosphere

Other Requirements

Essential criteria

15. Able to maintain intense concentration frequently and for prolonged periods with unpredictable patients (eg in the assessment and treatment of mentally disordered offender patients)
16. Able to function in potentially traumatic circumstances and in highly emotionally distressing circumstances on a frequent basis (eg in dealing with patients with serious mental illness, histories of homicide and serious violence, self-harm, sexual abuse)
17. Able to reflect on own professional practice through the clinical supervision process.
18. Willing to participate actively in CPD in line with Professional guidelines
