Wage

£17,680 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.


What you'll do at work

As our new apprentice, your duties will be varied and interesting. You’ll receive on and off the job learning and development, and will gain an insight into the day to day operations of busy transport office.

You’ll provide support with transport operations, planning and coordination, compliance documents and customer and supplier communication. Duties will include but are not limited to:

Transport Operations Support:

* Assisting with day-to-day transport administration
* Supporting load scheduling and movement tracking
* Liaising with drivers, subcontractors, and internal staff
* Updating job records, load sheets, and movement logs

Planning & Coordination:

* Assisting with route planning and basic feasibility checks
* Supporting permit and escort coordination processes
* Exposure to abnormal load requirements and constraints
* Maintaining planning trackers and job status sheets

Compliance & Documentation:

* Filing and maintaining transport and compliance records
* Supporting permit applications and movement paperwork
* Assisting with audit preparation and document control
* Understanding operator licence, FORS, and DVSA requirements

Customer & Supplier Communication:

* Drafting basic emails to clients and suppliers
* Handling routine enquiries under supervision
* Updating customers on movement status where appropriate
* Developing professional communication standards

What you'll learn

Course contents

* Comply with regulations and legislation when working. For example, drivers working hours, working time directive, and Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) guidance.
* Comply with health and safety when working.
* Follow company policy, processes and standard operating procedures.
* Plan and prioritise daily activities for example to customer job requirements, back loads, delivery.
* Plan multiple drop routes and jobs.
* Inputting customer jobs for collection and delivery.
* Track job progress.
* Amend or re-plan routes when delivery circumstances change, for example, changing weather conditions, road closures and accidents, customer requirements.
* Adapt approach when supporting operation with, for example, changing weather conditions, road closures and accidents.
* Record or enter information - paper based or electronic. For example, job sheets, handover documents, work sheets, and checklists.
* Optimises routes, vehicle type and loading.
* Comply with company specific policy and procedures by using the appropriate mode of transportation for ultra-low emission zones (ULEZ) and clean air zones.
* Arrange the maintenance and inspection of the vehicle.
* Use technology, and systems. General data protection regulation (GDPR). Cyber security.
* Use the traffic management system or other relevant systems, to add, and update customer job requirements.
* Conduct a briefing or debriefing session with colleagues.
* Communicate in writing with others for example, internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers.
* Communicate with others verbally for example, internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers.
* Manage customer queries and complaints.
* Apply the company’s service standards for internal and external customer services.
* Escalate issues, for example, driver infringements and non-operational procedures.
* Apply team working and wellbeing principles.
* Apply equity, diversity, and inclusion principles in the workplace.
* Carry out and record learning and development activities.

Training schedule

Traffic Operator Level 2.

All delivery for this apprenticeship will take place within your place of work. A dedicated Vocational Trainer will visit on average once every 4-weeks, to establish a personal learning and development plan, outlining a schedule of training activities and business objectives.

You will have a named workplace mentor, regular one-to-one checkins, clear task ownership and feedback, support with off-the-job training and coursework and exposure to wider business operations.

Learning & Development Structure:

Phase 1: Induction & Foundations (Months 1–3):

* Health & safety induction
* Introduction to transport operations and terminology
* Systems training (TMS, spreadsheets, document control)
* Shadowing experienced staff
* Basic admin and data accuracy focus
* Outcome: Understands the business, workflows, and expectations.

Phase 2: Assisted Responsibility (Months 4–9):

* Managing defined admin tasks independently
* Supporting live jobs under supervision
* Assisting with planning documentation and compliance packs
* Increased customer and supplier interaction
* Outcome: Can support operations reliably with limited supervision.

Phase 3: Operational Confidence (Months 10–18):

* Owning routine operational tasks
* Supporting planners on live movements
* Preparing draft documentation and reports
* Demonstrating understanding of compliance and risk
* Outcome: Ready for progression into a permanent operational role

Other requirements

Westdijk Transport is located on Haven Road, near the end of the Humber Terminal close to Immingham and North Killingholme. Please check the location and ensure you would be able to report for work on a daily basis.
