Job overview

* The post-holder will act as a Keyworker for patients admitted to the Trust with an oncological emergency, a suspected cancer diagnosis, and complications of Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) or with a cancer of unknown primary.
* The post-holder will continually develop, implement and evaluate the Cancer outreach service to improve and maintain standards of patient care and promote a seamless service within a multi-professional framework
* Be a clinical expert in Cancer outreach and Cancer of Unknown primary with excellent communication skills. The role requires the ability to work autonomously and independently but within an integrated collaborative team

* Fixed term position for 6 months to cover sickness within the team.


Main duties of the job

* Ensure their role reflects the core components of the clinical nurse specialist which includes: clinical practice, management / organisation, education, research and audit, taking into account the national cancer agenda and its impact on service delivery
* Delivers quality care by delivering evidence based individualised and personalised care
* To be a point of contact for patients with a suspected cancer diagnosis / a cancer of unknown primary and patients admitted with complications of Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment or an oncological emergency
* Act as a role model demonstrating high standards of care and providing clinical leadership to others
* Use of advanced communications skills when discussing diagnosis, treatment options, prognosis with patients with a new cancer diagnosis / suspected cancer diagnosis
* Implementation and evaluation of person-centred care for all patients
* Maintain clinical skills in physical assessment
* Attend consultant ward rounds to review inpatients admitted with a suspected cancer diagnosis / a cancer of unknown primary and patients admitted with complications of Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment or an oncological emergency

Person specification


Knowledge and Experience


Essential criteria

* Clinical knowledge and understanding of Cancer outreach Services
* Understanding of acute oncological emergencies and their treatment management
* Knowledge of relevant NHS legislation to include clinical governance/COSHH/Health and Safety/Infection Control/Clinical Waste/Manual Handling/Confidentiality/Data Protection Act
* Ability to work effectively in an emotionally demanding environment
* Understand the role of the MDTs
* Experience of multi-professional working
* Experience of teaching, supervising junior staff
* Evidence of good communication skills


Desirable criteria

* Up to date knowledge of current evidence based practice in Haematology/Cancer and Acute Oncology Services and or/ urgent/ emergency care
* Relevant post registration experience, at Band 5 or above in Cancer Services including Acute Oncology/ and o Emergency care
* Experience of cannulation, venepuncture and SACT administration -
* Ability to support and influence change
* Experience of audit and research
* Understanding of Macmillan Cancer Support and its role across the UK
* Leadership and management experience


Skills and Abilities


Essential criteria

* Highly effective communication skills - verbally and written to staff, patients and relatives including in situations of conflict or distress
* Able to gain credibility with and influence colleagues including influencing clinical changes where appropriate
* Strong organisational skills - prioritising complex situations
* The ability to lead and influence change
* Demonstrates ability to implement and utilise audit data to improve quality
* Clinical expert in defined area of work
* Able to advise on and implement improvements to the quality and efficiency of care for patients
* Ability to act as facilitator, mentor and supervisor to colleagues
* Flexibility, adaptability to meet needs of a changing service
* Ability to cope with emotional issues presented in the course of work, and to support others
* IT literate

* Experience and evidence of up to date administering Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment


Qualifications and Training


Essential criteria

* Registered General Nurse
* First level degree in related subject or undertaking a Degree Pathway
* Post basic qualification in cancer care willing to work towards it
* Evidence of continued professional development.
* Advanced communication skills training or prepared to work towards
* Non-Medical Prescribing or willingness to working towards
* PACR or willingness to work towards
* PADRAP or wiliness to work towards
* Evidence of masters level academic study or willingness to work towards Masters (in relevant health related subject)


Desirable criteria

* Recognised teaching qualification or prepared to work toward
* Research qualification
* Management or Leadership Qualification
* National SACT passport or willingness to undertake


Aptitudes


Essential criteria

* Ability to undertake advanced communication skills including the breaking of bad news
* Ability to sharing complex details in a non-jargon way
* Ability to offer guidance and advice to empower the patient to make the right decisions for the their safety managing toxicities of SACT
* Ability to undertake the UKONS Triage Assessment and follow nationally and locally agreed guidelines to the care of oncological emergencies or willingness to develop the skills
* Ability to manage the working day with unpredictable workload due to the emergency element of the role
* Ability to use time to develop and educate staff through UKONS Triage Teaching for specific cancer pathway
