Main duties of the job
The Acute Medicine department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is a dynamic department known for taking a hands‑on role in service development, quality improvement, education and training. In December 2022 we opened our brand new Acute Medical Unit (AMU) that boasts 36 assessment spaces across level 2 and level 3, and houses our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) facility. We also provide additional Acute Medicine capacity on our 24‑bed EAU4 (Emergency Assessment Unit). The team cares for patients in these areas and provides an Acute Medicine in‑reach service in the Emergency Department during daytime hours.

Job responsibilities
* Provide high‑quality consultant‑delivered care to patients, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care are met.
* Take responsibility for the management of patients admitted on the medical take, post‑take ward round (PTWR), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Emergency Assessment Unit.
* Provide teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
* Supervise and train the junior clinical team and our specialty doctors.
* Take a proactive role in the department’s clinical governance agenda and lead continuous learning and improvement, in line with the Trust’s policies.
* Liaise with clinicians and managers within and outside the department to address any issues affecting the service.
* Participate in relevant audit and quality assurance processes.
Person Specification
Essential
* Full or working towards full professional registration.
* Experience of working at a senior level with supervisory responsibilities.
* Experience of leading a team, developing an effective specialist service and awareness of NHS structures, management and national targets.
* Proven ability to teach clinical skills.
* Example of working quickly especially under pressure.
Desirable
* Full GMC / CCT Specialist Registration / PP.
* Evidence of change adaptation / management.
* Examples of working flexibly and pragmatically.
* Examples of high moral standing.
