Overview
We are an NHS community and inpatient mental health and learning disability service seeking Support Workers to join a new team supporting young people with a learning disability aged 16–25 who are experiencing a crisis. The role focuses on person-centred care, therapeutic support, and developing a positive team culture. Training and development are provided, including clinically led approaches such as trauma-focused care and Positive Behaviour Support (PBS).
These roles support the Senior Support Workers and interlink with the Unit Manager, Administrator, and other professionals across the unit. You will interact with service users, their families and carers, and a wide range of professionals from across Greater Manchester.

Main duties and responsibilities
* Support and contribute to developing and maintaining an environment defined by high-quality care and support.
* Work as an assistant or co-worker in therapeutic activities and/or group work under the guidance of senior staff.
* Listen to service users, families and carers to develop boundaried therapeutic relationships.
* Accurately document observations and clinical care in line with Trust policy.
* Ensure effective communication within the team; report any changes or unusual occurrences in service users’ behaviour or condition.
* Accurately report concerns and maintain confidentiality in all service users’ matters.
* Participate in maintaining a clean, tidy, and safe environment.
* Value diversity and promote equality of opportunity for all; ensure individuals are treated fairly.
* Provide interventions in accordance with least restrictive practice.
* Support the development and implementation of Positive Behaviour Support Plans.
* Attend to personal hygiene needs and assist with mealtimes as required, promoting quality of life and independence.
* Attend education and training sessions arranged for the team; undertake duties under supervision of qualified staff.
* Provide guidance to new staff during induction and participate in staff training and the care certificate process.
* Act as a positive role model to service users and staff; demonstrate de-escalation skills in managing aggression (subject to training and competency).
* Attend statutory and mandatory training; pursue ongoing self-development.
* Escort service users to areas outside the service as delegated; adhere to Trust and local policies and guidelines.
Person specification
Education / Qualifications
* Essential: NVQ Level 3 in Care (or equivalent experience) or commitment to work towards; Care Certificate or willingness to work towards
* Desirable: Assessor in CC
Experience
* Essential: Experience of working with Children and Young People; with learning disability and/or autism; in community and/or residential settings; experience of carrying out observations; experience of Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression; experience of working with people with a learning disability to enhance quality of life
* Desirable: Experience of caring for others; working in a multidisciplinary team; delivering therapeutic activities
Knowledge
* Essential: Understanding of positive behavioural support; awareness of stigma and discrimination related to learning disabilities
* Desirable: Awareness of ward procedures and clinical observations
Skills and abilities
* Essential: Ability to impart knowledge, supervise and direct others under supervision; effective communication with clients and carers; calm, patient, and empathetic; respond sensitively to emotional distress; accurate and concise observation reporting; develop therapeutic relationships with patients and families; organise day-to-day tasks
* Desirable: Willingness to participate in induction and training for junior staff
