Assistant Estimator
Location: Manchester
Salary: £40,000 - £45,000
A growing civil engineering and groundworks contractor is seeking an organised and commercially aware Assistant Estimator to support the delivery of Residential Infrastructure projects. This role suits someone with solid understanding of Residential Groundworks, including Roads, Sewers, Foundations, and External Works.
The position offers hands‑on exposure to tendering, cost build‑ups, take‑offs, and client liaison, with clear progression into a full Estimator role.
Responsibilities:
* Assist in preparing accurate cost estimates for residential groundworks packages, including: Roads & Sewers, Plot works and foundations, Drainage and Utilities, External works and infrastructure
* Complete material and labour take‑offs from engineering drawings and specifications.
* Support the compilation of tender submissions, pricing documents, and BOQs.
* Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive quotations.
* Analyse tender documentation, identify risks, and flag clarifications.
* Maintain estimating databases, cost libraries, and tender trackers.
* Work closely with Estimators, Quantity Surveyors, and operational teams to ensure accurate pricing and smooth handover.
* Assist in value engineering exercises and alternative solution proposals.
* Attend site visits where required to support tender accuracy.
About you:
* HNC/HND, degree, or equivalent experience in Construction, Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or a related discipline.
* 1–3 years’ experience in an estimating role within residential groundworks or civil engineering.
* Strong understanding of groundworks processes, materials, and construction methods.
* Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, site plans, and specifications.
* Competent in take‑offs and measurement (digital or manual).
