Overview
FourYear Fully Funded Studentships
Centre for Doctoral Training in Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing
Help shape the future of global technology. Train at the forefront of UK industrial strategy.
The Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing is now recruiting outstanding students for its fouryear fully funded doctoral programme, starting with a specially designed integrated Master’s year, followed by a threeyear PhD.
This is a unique opportunity to work at the cutting edge of semiconductor science, advanced manufacturing, and highimpact engineering, in a field that underpins everything from netzero energy and telecoms to defence, healthcare, quantum technologies, and AI.
Why Compound Semiconductors?
Compound semiconductors are strategically vital to the UK and global economy. They are at the heart of nextgeneration technologies where performance, efficiency and resilience matter most. As governments and industries invest heavily in secure, sovereign semiconductor supply chains, trained experts in compound semiconductor manufacturing are in critical demand.
As a CDT student, you will be part of this national mission—developing technologies that translate directly from laboratory research into realworld industrial impact.
An Integrated, Supportive Pathway to a PhD
The programme begins with an integrated Master’s year, at Cardiff University, designed to bring students from diverse academic and professional backgrounds up to speed in semiconductor science, cleanroom practice, manufacturing processes, and industryrelevant skills.
After this foundation year, you will progress directly into a PhD project hosted at one of our partner institutions:
* Cardiff University
* The University of Sheffield
* The University of Manchester
* University College London (UCL)
Students benefit from cohortbased training, access to worldclass facilities, and close engagement with industrial partners.
Funding and Flexibility
* Fouryear fully funded studentship
* Enhanced stipend of £31,000 (for this year only)
* Tuition fees covered
* Research Training and Support Grant of £20,000
The enhanced stipend is designed to broaden access to doctoral study, and is ideal for:
* Applicants already in employment who might otherwise find it financially difficult to step away from a higher salary to pursue a traditional PhD
* Those with caring responsibilities
* Those who may otherwise be put off doing a PhD in case of incurring more debt
Commitment to Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
We are proud of the strong EDI mix within our existing cohorts and actively encourage applications from women and other underrepresented groups in engineering and physical sciences.
Our CDT offers a supportive, inclusive environment where diverse perspectives are valued and where students can thrive both academically and personally.
Who Should Apply?
We welcome applicants from:
* Graduates with a 2.1 in Physics, Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electronics, or related disciplines
* Industry professionals looking to transition into highimpact doctoral research
* Careerchangers motivated by applying science and engineering to globally relevant challenges
Join us to gain worldclass training, contribute to strategically crucial technologies, and become part of the next generation of leaders in compound semiconductor manufacturing. For more information and to apply go to EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing
