We are expanding our engineering team and are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support advanced reactor and fusion programmes. Working in multidisciplinary teams, you will ensure mechanical system and component design meaningfully informs engineering decisions and programme strategy.
Responsibilities
* Ownership of mechanical development activities from concept through detailed and production design, manufacture, integration, and testing, ensuring delivery to agreed schedule, budget, and quality requirements.
* Support and participate in practical assembly, integration, and test activities, including fault finding and iterative design improvement.
* Produce and review manufacturing‑ready designs, including detailed drawings, tolerances, and supporting documentation.
* Capture and flow down system‑level requirements into mechanical designs, ensuring traceability from requirements to delivered solution.
* Build and maintain relationships with subcontractors to enable engineering progression.
* Ensure all work is delivered in accordance with the Oxford Sigma Management System, including document control, design reviews and technical governance.
* Support knowledge sharing and capability development within the team, including informal mentoring of less‑experienced engineers where appropriate.
Qualifications & Experience
Ideally, you will have some of these:
* Bachelor’s (or higher) degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
* 3 - 8 years industrial experience.
* Proficiency in CAD/FEM software.
* Good understanding of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) principles.
* Proven ability to produce manufacturing‑ready drawings to ISO BS 8888, including appropriate use of GD&T.
* Familiarity with engineering codes, standards, or qualification processes relevant to high‑integrity systems.
* Broad science and engineering appreciation, with the ability to understand adjacent disciplines (e.g. materials, thermal hydraulics and neutronics) and integrate into engineering judgement.
* Awareness of legal and contractual aspects of project activities, such as procurement, processes, and regulatory compliance.
* An ability to communicate technical concepts to technical non-specialists.
* Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, including technical document quality.
* Experience as a project team member in a multi-partner environment.
Additionally, it would be advantageous if you have:
* Experience in integrated thermal and structural design and analysis.
* Experience with elevated temperature and pressure process systems, possibly including nuclear (tritium).
* Experience applying ASME BPVC, ASME B31.3, BS EN 13445, BS EN 13480, PSSR or PESR.
Due to the nature of the work, candidates must be British citizens and have been continuously resident in the UK for the past five years.
Benefits
