Head of Athletic Development at Rugby School

JOB PURPOSE

The Graduate Strength and Conditioning Coach collaborates with the Head of Athletic Development on deliverance of the Athletic Development program at Rugby School.

The Graduate Strength and Conditioning Coach is responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing evidence-based strength, speed, agility, and conditioning programs that enhance athletic performance and reduce injury risk. This role includes coordination with sport coaches and sports medicine personnel, and management of the performance facility to ensure safe, effective, and progressive training environments for all student-athletes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES


Program Design & Implementation

* Develop and oversee comprehensive strength and conditioning programs tailored to specific sports, positions, and individual athlete needs.
* Apply current research and best practices to maximize athletic development, performance, and recovery.
* Monitor athlete progress through testing, data tracking, and performance analytics.
* Understanding how the academic timetable operates and how sports can fit around academic requirements. Balancing the core focus on education with timetabled games and extracurricular sports.
* Work closely with sport coaches, athletic trainers, nutritionists, and medical personnel to coordinate integrated athlete care.
* Communicate effectively with athletes and staff regarding training plans, expectations, and performance outcomes.
* Participate in interdisciplinary meetings to discuss athlete readiness, return-to-play protocols, and load management.
* Foster good working relationships with all staff and students by attending house lunches 3 times a week and attending staff break meetings in the SCR/FLT as appropriate.


Facility & Equipment Management

* Oversee daily operations, scheduling, and safety standards of the strength and conditioning facility.


Teaching and coaching

* To contribute to the S & C provision in sport and games at Rugby School, during timetabled F Block, E Block and senior games on Tuesday & Thursday in all 3 terms.
* To support a team for a fixture on Saturdays
* Oversee and contribute to the training of all Scholar, AAPs and A teams.
* Deliver 1:1 and small group S & C coaching sessions.
* To create and distribute individual coaching session plans, that are differentiated and supplemented with appropriate coaching videos and CPD for teaching staff so that all sessions support the overall scheme of work.


Events

* To support the Director of Sport in helping to coordinate recruitment events including, but not exclusively, IAPS tournaments, prep school tournaments, primary schools / junior club tournaments, Scholars Experience Days, Curtain Raisers.
* To organise and deliver pre-season training prior to the start of each term.
* To attend and support with core school events including but not exclusively assemblies, Crick & Barby, Sports Day, 1567 and house competitions.
* To coordinate Sports Day annually.


Sports Scholars & AAP

Mentor elite athletes and maintain regular communication with external pathways regarding commitments, transport and development.

* To liaise with the Academic Office, Hm's, Tutors and Sports Staff regarding the academic and pastoral progress of Sports Scholars and AAP students.
* To co-ordinate Calendar entries on school portal in liaison with the Deputy Head Co-curricular.
* To co-ordinate SOCs data inputting (fixtures, training groups, 1:1 tuition, small group coaching sessions, and results).
* To liaise with the Sports Events Coordinator and direct as required.


Safeguarding

* All staff have a responsibility and duty of care to safeguard and promote the welfare of pupils. Staff must be aware of the systems within the school which support safeguarding and must act in accordance with the School's Safeguarding & Child Protection policy and Code of Conduct. Staff will receive appropriate child protection training which is regularly updated.
* Responsibility for ensuring your team undertake annual safeguarding training and policy acceptance is 100%.
* Ensure all new starters have been appropriately vetted and all school / HR checks have been completed before being allowed to commence employment.
* Responsible for supervising any visitors / visiting coaches in your area of responsibility to ensure compliance with the schools safeguarding requirements and visitors policy.
