Consultant in Gastroenterology- Inflammatory Bowel Disease & Endoscopy

One whole-time/part-time post as Consultant in Gastroenterology with a specialist interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease is available now at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The appointment is on a whole-time/part-time basis and applications are welcome from those who wish to job share.

Any person who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis, in consultation with consultant colleagues. Suitably qualified job-share candidates will receive serious consideration.


Main duties of the job

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES:

Clinical

The post-holder's duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe in Oxford and the Horton Hospital in Banbury, and it is a condition of the appointment that the post-holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations. There is a strong possibility for the post to require working Saturday lists in the future, in which case there would be appropriate time off in lieu. Clinics are a standard 4h duration with new (30min) and follow up (15min) patients. Endoscopy lists are a standard 12 units per list, with a mixture of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (1 unit diagnostic, 2 units therapeutic) and colonoscopy (2 units diagnostic including simple polypectomy, 3 units therapeutic).

The Gastroenterology department has a team of secretarial and administrative support. Office space will be provided, with access to a computer/laptop. IT support is available from the Trust IT support team. One of the existing consultant teams provides mentorship support to new Consultants joining the team.

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holder's contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.

Personal and Professional Development

The post-holder will be required to keep themselves fully up to date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust.

Appraisal and Revalidation

The post-holder will be expected to participate fully in appraisal and revalidation.

Management

The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. They will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of their patients, and the running of their clinical department under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.

Responsibilities for Health & Safety

The post holder is responsible for ensuring that all duties and responsibilities of this post are carried out in compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Statutory Regulations and Trust Policies and Procedures. This will be supported by the provision of training and specialist advice where required.

Infection Control

Infection Control is everyone’s responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non-clinical, are required to adhere to the Trust's Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the burden of Health‑Associated Infections including MRSA.

All staff employed by the OUH Trust have the following key responsibilities:

* Staff must decontaminate their hands prior to and after direct patient contact or contact with the patient’s surroundings.
* Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by the Trust.
* Staff members who develop an infection (other than common colds and illness) that may be transmittable to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health.

All staff have a responsibility to listen to the views of patients and to contribute to service improvements based on patient feedback. You will be expected to support the Trust in this aim through your working practice.

Serious Untoward Incidents

All staff must report incidents and near misses so that the Trust can reduce the risk of harm by investigating and incorporating risk reducing measures to safeguard patients and staff, in accordance with the Trust Incident Reporting Policy.

Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults

The Trust is committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults throughout the organization. As a member of the trust there is a duty to assist in protecting patients and families from any form of harm when they are vulnerable.

Information Governance

General

The post-holder will assume a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of his/her department.


Person Specification


Qualifications/Training

* Full GMC Registration
* MRCP or equivalent
* CCT in Gastroenterology or Registration on GMC Specialist Register in Gastroenterology; OR within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview
* General training in Gastroenterology to specialist level with extensive experience in Gastrointestinal endoscopy and JAG accreditation or equivalent in Upper GI endoscopy
* JAG Accreditation of colonoscopy skills
* BCSP accredited
* PhD or equivalent


Experience

* General training in Gastroenterology to specialist level or equivalent. Extensive experience in upper and lower Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Advanced gastrointestinal endoscopy
* Consultant or senior trainee level
* Advanced/complex therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy. Training / experience in intestinal ultrasound.


Skills and Knowledge

* Sufficient leadership, organisational, communication, professional and personal skills to effectively undertake the role of specialist and consultant in a large Teaching Hospital.
* Excellent personal and interpersonal skills
* Excellent spoken and written English. Communication skills should be highly developed. Computing skills: ability to use standard programmes.
* Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees
* Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities
* Ability and experience to conduct independent research and attract funding
* Evidence of advanced communication training
* Management training and experience
