Role responsibilities

The Operational Support Manager at Transport for Wales plays a vital role in investigating safety-related events—including accidents, incidents, and other occurrences—across the network.

This position involves tracking trends, managing corrective actions, and producing lessons learned summaries to improve safety culture. The role requires close collaboration with operational teams and stakeholders to build local investigation capabilities, with approximately 80% of time spent on-site across the network and the remainder at HQ for meetings and strategic engagement.

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to –

1. Conduct detailed investigations of accidents, incidents, significant events and other safety/security/environmental issues such as those derived from trend analysis.
2. Maintain a comprehensive incident reporting database, collect data and other information in support of event investigation procedures
3. Prepare investigation reports that include the facts, analysis, conclusions and recommendations associated with an event.
4. Assist in the coordination of corrective actions within departments and facilitate risk management techniques within the organisation to mitigate identified risks, developing lesson learned summaries and communicate summaries to the workforce

Who we’re looking for

5. Appropriate H&S qualification (NEBOSH certificate as a minimum)
6. Up to date knowledge of legislation and rail industry changes relevant to role and its area of impact
7. Computer literate with the ability to analyse and present data, especially in Microsoft Excel, Word & Power Point
8. Good communication and negotiation silks
9. Ideally have worked at a level of influence with internal and external stakeholders.

Welsh Language Skills

The ability to speak/write Welsh would make a great addition to your application, but it is not essential for this role.

Transport for Wales supports and promotes the use of the Welsh Language by employees and will encourage them to develop, improve and maintain their Welsh Language skills. We fully support our people who want to improve their Welsh language skills, and personal development for Welsh Language skills are offered in a variety of ways such as online learning, classroom courses and funding attendance at local community courses.
