Job Description
The Environment Agency is looking for a Marine Water Quality Officer to support evidence‑based decisions, model bathing water quality and nutrient loads in estuaries, and assess the impact of discharges on water quality across key areas such as Nuclear New Build, major infrastructure projects and the Water Industry National Environment Programme.
Two positions are available: one permanent and one fixed‑term for 6 months. The role is based in the Marine team within Operations Catchment Services and is a national, virtual role with flexible and hybrid working arrangements.
Responsibilities
* Provide timely answers to technical questions.
* Review reports and summarise key information for decision‑making.
* Use data to inform water quality models.
* Apply sound records management principles.
* Interpret monitoring data and model outputs to support environmental protection.
* Summarise and communicate technical work, escalating challenges when needed.
* Build strong relationships across a dispersed team and with external partners.
* Use initiative to contribute to the team’s work and the wider organisation.
Qualifications
* Experience in data analysis and ideally some knowledge of modelling software.
* Knowledge of water quality and marine environment desirable.
* Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline expected; professional membership or working towards membership is a plus.
* Comfortable working in a virtual team and travelling for occasional national meetings.
* Familiarity with tools such as Excel, Access, R, Power BI, GIS, and specialist packages like Mike or Cormix is advantageous.
Incident Response
Incident response is part of the role; you will take on incident‑management duties with full training and support provided. Additional payment and flexible arrangements may apply.
