Essex Traffic Controller Centre Operator
Contract: Essex Highways
Location: Flexible / Hybrid working
Hours: 16 (must include Saturdays 9:00-17:30)
Contract Type: Secondment
We are seeking a proactive and confident individual to join the Essex Traffic Control Centre (ETCC) team, supporting the safe and efficient movement of traffic across the county. In this role, you will monitor the live road network, respond to incidents, assist in the coordination of special events and ensure timely, accurate travel information is communicated to the public and key partners.
You will also support the Bus Lane Enforcement function by reviewing evidence of traffic contraventions and making informed decisions regarding the issuing of Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs), helping maintain safety and compliance on Essex roads.
16 hours per week (must include Saturdays 9:00-17:30). Saturdays can be worked from home. One additional office-based shift per week may be required.
Full on-site training provided Monday-Friday during the first week (paid additionally).
The Role
1. Monitor road network for congestion and incidents using various systems.
2. Implement pre-defined plans and log responses to incidents.
3. Liaise with emergency services, National Highways (regional and national traffic control centres), works partners and other relevant parties to provide co-ordinated incident & special event response.
4. Handle the two-way data exchange with the National Highways Regional and National Traffic Control Centres.
5. Provide on-street information through Variable Message Signs in response to incidents or special events.
About You
6. GCSE grades A-C/9-4 in Maths and English
7. Good working knowledge of Microsoft applications including Excel & Outlook
8. This role requires you to be friendly, positive, self-supporting, quick paced and have the ability to motivate others.
9. Communication is key as the role will require you to work directly with a colleague or at times on your own.
10. You should enjoy testing situations and have the flexibility to work in an unstructured environment where you have freedom to act and the authority to make judgements.
