Offer description

Come and join us on a National Trust apprenticeship, where we’ll support and develop you to play an integral part in our work to protect historic sites, tackle climate change, and help people and nature thrive. You don’t need experience for this role, just enthusiasm and a desire to learn.

As a Horticulture Apprentice, you’ll help look after our 224 historic gardens, contributing to conservation and climate change strategies through horticultural maintenance, conservation, and garden care to safeguard them for the future.

This role can lead to an Assistant Gardener or Gardener position, with potential progression to a Level 3 Horticulture Supervisor apprenticeship after gaining additional experience.

What It's Like To Work Here

Our gardens are heritage sites with Europe's most extensive plant collection. Gardeners are responsible for conserving and developing plant collections and gardens, attracting many visitors. You’ll be part of a professional team caring for these historic gardens.

Your training combines college blocks and online learning, with expenses and travel paid. Opportunities include travel to other National Trust locations, training events, and industry networking.

Dunham Massey, a 3,000-acre estate near Manchester, features historic gardens, a Winter Garden, rose and kitchen gardens, glasshouse, nursery, meadows, and herbaceous borders, offering comprehensive horticultural training.

What You'll Be Doing

You’ll work with your mentor on apprenticeship-specific tasks, develop relevant skills and knowledge, attend review meetings, and complete mandatory e-learning and courses.

Who We're Looking For

Ideally, you meet the following criteria:

* At least 2 GCSEs including English and maths at grade E/2 or equivalent (EHCP holders can have entry level 3).
* Aged 16 or over, completed Year 11, not in full-time education.
* Right to work in the UK and been resident for three years before starting.
* No current participation in other training or education programs.
* Ability to travel to the work location.

If aged 18 or under and without grade C/4 in English and maths, you’ll be enrolled in functional skills level 2 as part of your apprenticeship. Those over 19 can choose to do this optionally. Qualifications or experience related to horticulture may affect funding eligibility.

* Substantial pension scheme (up to 10% of salary)
