Job overview

The Outpatient Department is recruiting for band 7 Senior Sister/Charge Nurses to join our highly motivated team to provide high quality and professional services for patients. The successful applicants will contribute to the smooth running of the service, as a visible and effective clinical leader and in managing a nursing team and orthopaedic team. The role of the band 7 is predominantly concerned with ensuring the delivery of high standards of patient centered care ensuring the cost-effective use of resources. It combines clinical expertise, leadership and educational/research skills with managerial and professional responsibilities.

The post holder will have responsibility for the day to day management of the Outpatient Department. The post holder will practice in clinics of varying specialties demonstrating a high level of clinical and management decision-making. They will work as a senior member of the multidisciplinary team to ensure that the needs of the patient are met at all times and that staffing is at an appropriate level to meet patient needs. The post holder will take responsibility for high standards of patient care in a fast paced environment which sees in excess of 30000 patients per month.

The post holders will utilize good leadership skills to ensure that clinics run smoothly and that care is patient centered to provide them with a good experience. The post holder will be accessible and visible to staff, patients and visitors. The post holder will ensure that patients are treated with respect and dignity.

Main duties of the job

To ensure that outstanding high quality care is delivered to patients and other service users in the Outpatient Department in keeping with the Trust’s We Care values whilst maintaining professional standards.

This is done through working collaboratively with clinical and administrative teams who deliver care to patients and service users who are on different treatment pathways

The post holder is responsible for the overall management of the clinical area and for the professional development of staff supporting the numerous specialities that provide care to patients and service users in the Outpatient Department

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Registered Nurse Level 1 with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
2. Recognised teaching /assessing qualification. ENB 998 or similar
3. Key practice assessor or key practice supervisor to support student nurses

Desirable criteria

4. Key mentor to support students nurses and practices assessors/supervisors
5. Certificate in specialist service e.g. orthopaedics, dermatology, ENT, emergency care
6. Degree (BSc) in nursing qualification or working towards one.
7. An ILM qualification in leadership or have undertaken a leadership course or workshop e.g, STATT, Ashridge Leadership

Experience in Leadership

Essential criteria

8. Experience sister/charge nurse at band 6 in an outpatient setting.
9. Experience line managing teams which includes sickness management, health roster, appraisals, one to one sessions, recruiting staff.
10. Experience working in outpatient clinics of varying specialites including surgical and medical clinics
11. Lead on audits and/or participate in department audits such as cleaning, medicines management.
12. Ability to implement a change that results in service improvement. Evidence of participating in a quality improvement programme or having undertaken a service improvement change
13. Conflict resolution to prevent escalations
14. Deputising for senior sister

Desirable criteria

15. Report writing, chairing meetings
16. Budget Management – can understand the elements of a budget and can adhere to budgetary requirements

Knowledge

Essential criteria

17. Up to date knowledge of evidence based practice in clinical specialities.
18. Understanding the prinicples of clinical and shared governance and the implications in practice
19. Current issues in professional practice. – standards of proficiency, revalidation
20. Key aspects of RTT in terms of timings of treatments.

Desirable criteria

21. Understanding of current issues relating to NHS outpatient services. e.g. outpatient transformation projects, e.g. Dr Dr, Web Post,

Skills

Essential criteria

22. Excellent written skills. Can also demonstrate use of Excel, Microsoft Word, Micorsoft Teams, Power Point, Cerner
23. Demonstrate communications skills that are required to lead and develop teams. e.g communicating complex information, understanding complex data and sharing this with others in a manner that they can understand.
24. Customer care and complaints handling
25. Datix incident managment
26. Ability to work within set time frames working to priorities and deadlines.

27. Can complete risk assessments for staff and raise departmental risks.

29. Excellent interpersonal skills.
30. Ability to work within set time frames working to priorities and deadlines.
31. Can prioritise work own work load demands as well as keeping to deadlines to ensure that departmental objectives are achieved
32. Flexiblity in terms of willing to support both patients and staff as required.
