Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

We have an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic and driven Band 6 Speech and Language Therapists to join the Adult Speech and Language Therapy Team at Macclesfield District General Hospital. We have vacancies available in the acute, community and outpatient setting dependent on experience and your areas of interest. There is also the possibility of doing voice. We will consider full and part-time requests.

You will join our forward thinking and highly experienced team to deliver quality care to patients with communication and swallowing disorders in a variety of settings. We offer a dysphagia rapid access service where patients are seen in a timely manner in order to reduce hospital admissions. You will have experience of working with adults with a range of complex long term conditions and be competent in the assessment and management of dysphagia and communication disorders.

Enthusiastic and motivated, you will be confident liaising with a range of health care professionals. You will be innovative and able to contribute to the development of the Speech and Language Therapy Service. Previous experience of working with patients in an acute and/ or community setting are essential. The successful applicant must also have completed their dysphagia post graduate competencies. We offer regular VFS clinics and FEES clinics, and training can be provided to the right candidate.

Hours per week: 37.5 (full and part time available)


Main duties of the job

To work as an autonomous clinician to provide specialist speech and language therapy to a high standard through appropriate assessment, and accurate analysis and clinical reasoning in order to interpret, diagnose as appropriate, set goals and provide treatment for patients with a range of complex neurological, head and neck and long term conditions delivering therapy in the most appropriate environment for the patient e.g. in-patient wards, outpatient clinic, home, nursing homes.

To use specialist knowledge and skills to contribute to the multidisciplinary case management to ensure appropriate pathways of care and communication via liaison and referral to other agencies as required embracing neighbourhood team philosophies.

To support and contribute to the operational delivery of specialist services and the development of initiatives, ensuring consistent service delivery with other clinical specialist services.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* HCPC registration Registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
* Attendance at degree level post graduate courses relevant to the specialist area or working towards this or be prepared to study at this level


Specific Job Requirements

* Proven post registration experience of working with patients with a range of neurological and long-term conditions
* Knowledge and experience of administering and interpreting a range of standardised and non-standardised assessments and individualised interventions relevant to the client group
* Post basic qualifications in dysphagia or equivalent knowledge and experience
* Proven ability to manage complex rehabilitation issues and ensure safe and timely discharge of patients


Experience

* Proven post registration experience, some of which is in a adult setting / associated area
* Experience of completing and contributing to audit / research
* Experience of contributing to the teaching and mentoring of staff & members of the MDT


Skills

* Well established knowledge of a range of assessment tools relevant to specific client group with speech, language, communication and swallowing difficulties
* Well established knowledge of a range of therapeutic and management approaches to relevant to client group
* Ability to lead and supervise junior colleagues
* Advanced communication/ interpersonal skills - including observation, listening and empathy skills
* Participation in clinical audit
* Ability to prioritise workload, achieving a balance between clinical and other aspects of role
* Ability to work autonomously and as part of team
* Ability to work under pressure
* Proactive, takes own initiative
* Knowledge of the use of videofluoroscopy


Knowledge

* Post registration knowledge which is relevant to the specialist area and evidenced by CPD
* Awareness of national policies and procedures (relevant to the specialist client group)
* Knowledge of standards of record keeping
* Knowledge of the service / trust values & objectives
