Day-to-day care of patients on the adult neurosurgical and general Critical Care units. Full-time including participation in a full shift rota system (48 hours per week).
Applications are invited for appointment to Senior Clinical Fellow in Intensive Care Medicine (ST4+ or equivalence) for a Fixed Term period from February 2026 for 12 months.
The post is solely based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.
This is an excellent opportunity for those who are looking to increase their experience in a busy tertiary intensive care unit. The job would also be suitable for those working through the certificate of eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) route to certificate of completion of training in intensive care medicine. Additional time can be allocated to develop specialist interests to complement clinical work – this can be in education, research, governance and quality improvement.
Main duties of the job
The clinical duties of the post include the following:
1. The Critical Care trust doctor must ensure that patients are managed in a timely and appropriate way in all aspects of critical care: resuscitation, stabilisation, working diagnosis, adequate monitoring, treatment, and discharge.
2. Proficient in detailed handover of complex patients.
3. Prompt assessment of the critically ill patients referred to ICU, work closely with the Outreach Team, reviewing and manage unstable patients on the ward.
4. The trainees will participate in the daily consultant ward round and review all admissions.
5. Coordinate and evaluate the suitability for admission to ICU in consultation with the ICU Consultant.
6. Adequate documentation.
7. Communicate regularly with patients’ relatives.
8. Identifying patients suitable for discharge and liaise with ward teams.
9. Attendance and participation in the critical care teaching (lectures, journal club presentations, M&M, Clinical Governance)
10. Other areas of management can be arranged, based on the trainee’s achieved competencies and requirements.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The University Hospitals Sussex East Critical Care Service manages 43 level 2-3 Intensive Care beds. It admits around 3600 patients a year, 40% medical and 60% surgical (including Cardiac and Neurosurgery). There is a separate Cardiothoracic intensive care unit adjacent to the main ICU and staffed by the Cardiac ICU team. In June 2023 we moved into a brand-new purpose-built unit with excellent teaching facilities including a SIM suite within the unit.

Experience/Qualifications
Essential criteria
12. Basic medical degree
13. Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
14. Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
Desirable criteria
15. Additional post-graduate qualification in critical care including ECHO/USS qualifications
16. Advanced Trauma Life Support, Advanced Paediatric Life Support or equivalent
17. European diploma in intensive care medicine or FFICM
18. Primary FRCA/MRCP/MRCEM

19. Breadth of experience in and outside specialty

20. At least 2 years’ experience in critical care medicine as dedicated placements
21. Working at a senior level compatible of ST4+
