The Malvern Hills is a muchloved and nationally important landscape on the border betweenWorcestershire and Herefordshire. Over 1,000,000 visits are madeeach year and the view from the top of the Hills has been voted oneof the best in Britain. Much of the land cared for by the Trustlies within a National Landscape, as well as containing Sites ofSpecial Scientific Interest and historic ScheduledMonuments.
Theorganisation
MalvernHills Trust (MHT) is a statutory body established by Act ofParliament in 1884 and is also a registered charity. MHT owns ormanages around 1,200 ha (3,000 acres) of the Malvern Hills andCommons. The duties and responsibilities of the Trustees are setout under the 1884 Act and four subsequent Acts and include:
* Preserving the naturalaspect of the hills
* Protecting and managingtrees, shrubs, turf and othervegetation
* Preventing unlawful digging andquarrying
* Keeping the hills open, unenclosedand unbuilt on as open spaces for the recreation and enjoyment ofthe public.
MHT is also responsiblefor conserving and enhancing biodiversity, Sites of SpecialScientific Interest and ScheduledMonuments.
MHT's two main sources of income are alevy charged to local Council Tax payers in Malvern town,Guarlford, Malvern Wells, West Malvern, Colwall and Mathon and therevenue from car parks on its land. Copies of the annual accountsare available on the website.
TheRole
The Ranger role involvesundertaking a range of regular patrol duties, proactive andreactive site visits, and practical tasks across all the landmanaged by the Malvern Hills Trust. These include assisting andguiding members of the public, monitoring public use of the land(car parks, paths and open areas and public events) and compliancewith the byelaws, undertaking practical habitat and estatemaintenance tasks; coordinating and leading conservationvolunteers; and caring for the landscape, wildlife and archaeology.
Work needs to conform to statutoryrestrictions, environmental good practice and Health and Safetylegislation, as well as complying with the Trust's duties under theActs of Parliament and helping to deliver our Land Management Planand BusinessPlan.
