Role Overview
We are seeking a creative, motivated, and talented Middleweight Designer to join our design team. Reporting to the Deputy Art Director, you will be responsible for creating market-leading book cover designs from initial brief to final artwork, collaborating with designers and illustrators to produce innovative and commercially driven designs.
This role focuses on our literary fiction and non-fiction imprints, John Murray and Baskerville, providing an excellent opportunity for career growth in book design.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a self-starting, organized creative who excels in a collaborative environment. Your portfolio should demonstrate a strong understanding of consumer-focused design across various projects, with a passion for innovative and forward-thinking cover designs. You should possess excellent communication skills and experience in fiction and non-fiction cover design within the publishing industry.
Responsibilities
* Create distinctive designs that meet market needs across all imprints, especially John Murray and Baskerville
* Design approximately 40 covers annually
* Manage projects from research to print-ready files
* Commission freelance designers and illustrators
* Stay updated on publishing and design trends
* Build strong relationships with editorial teams and external collaborators
Requirements
* Proven experience in the design industry
* Strong technical skills with Mac and Adobe Creative Suite
* A compelling portfolio demonstrating design passion and commercial awareness
* Experience in book design and visual design
* Understanding of print and digital production techniques
* Excellent teamwork, communication, and presentation skills
* Ability to understand consumer needs and market positioning
* Meticulous attention to detail
