Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts. The Chesterfield Health District provides public health services to the residents of Chesterfield County, Powhatan County, and the City of Colonial Heights. This position is based in Chesterfield.
The Chesterfield Health District is seeking an experienced Public Health Nurse (PHN)! The individual will start with primarily working with Long Term Services and Supports and Immunizations. The strategic vision is for PHN’s to have the opportunity to cross train in other nursing program areas to become a well rounded public health nurse. This strategy supports being able to being flexible to agency and community needs. The PHN independently provides professional nursing care to a wide array of patients ranging from pediatrics to adults. This role will also see patients a broad range of settings including clinics, homes, schools and other community or congregate care settings. Additionally, while this role is based in Chesterfield, work assignments can occur in any area within the Chesterfield Health District. The PHN will perform nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, develop and implement care plans, including the administration of medication and case management. This role will participate in public health emergencies and community health assessments. Based on community needs, some weekend and/or evening hours may be required. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a RN by state code.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum KSAs:
Communicates verbally and in writing, to analyze problems, situations and suggest solutions, leadership, follow directions and establish priorities
Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling technique
Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member and relate to the public
Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science, medical terminology, case management
May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required
Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR

Experience with community -based nursing
Experience working doing communicable disease epidemiological investigations
Experience working with diverse cultures, including low socioeconomic status
Public health experience
Experience administering childhood immunizations or vaccines
