Job overview

Newhaven Rehabilitation Unit seeks a motivated and enthusiastic Band 6 Physiotherapist to join our friendly, integrated team. You will be supported by our Clinical Specialist and Team Lead Physiotherapist, with opportunities to develop your clinical and leadership skills within a strong peer group of Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists, alongside a supportive multidisciplinary team. This role offers an excellent chance to enhance your skills within a dynamic and innovative department.


Main duties of the job

· Assess and treat a specialist caseload of patients, including those with complex or chronic conditions, as an autonomous practitioner, determining diagnoses and developing treatment plans without direct supervision.

· Support Band 7/B8a staff in planning and organizing the Newhaven Therapy Team's activities.

· Teach, supervise, and appraise recently qualified physiotherapists, physiotherapy assistants, and undergraduate students, and participate in teaching MDT staff.

· Engage in evidence-based practice, departmental research, and audit.

· Follow departmental protocols, Trust policies, and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Code of Conduct, and participate in CPD, audits, and service development projects.

Manage a significant clinical caseload and support clinical staff daily, working with Team Leads to ensure quality service delivery.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communication

1. Adapt communication skills to encourage treatment adherence, including for patients with communication difficulties such as dementia, learning disabilities, or sensory impairments.
2. Assess capacity to give consent, work within legal frameworks for patients lacking capacity, such as those with dementia or cognitive impairments.
3. Persuade, motivate, reassure, and explain to patients and carers to maximize rehabilitation potential.
4. Communicate sensitive information effectively to staff, patients, and carers, including prognoses and educational roles.
5. Diffuse potentially hostile situations using negotiation and interpersonal skills.
6. Maintain accurate, comprehensive documentation as per legal and departmental standards, and communicate assessment and treatment results through reports and letters.
7. Collaborate with medical, nursing, and therapy colleagues to ensure coordinated multidisciplinary service, attending case conferences and discharge planning meetings.
8. Keep the team leader informed on professional matters.
9. Maintain an accurate record-keeping system using POMR format, demonstrating evaluation and clinical reasoning.
10. Ensure documentation standards meet the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and departmental guidelines.
11. Record statistical data related to activity, highlighting variances with senior staff.
12. Use computer databases to generate reports as requested by senior staff.

Service Delivery and Improvement

1. Plan and evaluate practice through clinical audits and studies, with guidance from the Team Leader.
2. Support junior staff in conducting clinical audits.
3. Understand and apply Clinical Governance and Risk Management principles.
4. Assist in proposing and implementing Trust policies and service developments.
5. Manage physiotherapy equipment, adhering to departmental policies and CQC standards, ensuring safety and fault reporting.
6. Comply with all trust policies, procedures, and health and safety regulations, including infection control.
7. Report issues, complaints, incidents, and accidents promptly and document accordingly.

People Management and Development

1. Operate as the operational manager of the clinical team in the absence of the team leader.
2. Assist in supervising junior and therapy assistant staff, and formulate development plans.
3. Supervise undergraduate physiotherapy students on placements.
4. Lead interdisciplinary projects to develop the service.
5. Provide specialist advice and training to colleagues, patients, and carers.
6. Ensure application of Clinical Governance and Risk Management principles.
7. Prioritize and plan own workload flexibly to meet service needs.
8. Participate in departmental and multidisciplinary meetings.

Patient Care Delivery

1. Be accountable for all aspects of your work, including patient management.
2. Ensure high standards of clinical care, adhering to professional and departmental guidelines.
3. Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients with complex presentations.
4. Interpret clinical data to diagnose, identify problems, and prognosticate.
5. Develop and implement patient management, treatment, and discharge plans.
6. Seek senior guidance for highly complex cases.
7. Demonstrate advanced manual therapy skills.
8. Re-assess patients continually and advise on activity levels.
9. Maintain confidentiality, dignity, and promote equality and diversity.
10. Refer to other health disciplines as appropriate.
11. Work a rostered 7-day service and participate in weekend/evening services.
12. Maintain professionalism in all settings.
13. Perform any other duties deemed necessary by physiotherapy management.


Person specification


Professional Registration

* HCPC Registered
* Evidence of relevant postgraduate courses/CPD


Skills Clinical

* Experience in diverse clinical rotations as a Junior Physiotherapist, including inpatient and outpatient settings.
* Postgraduate NHS experience supported by evidence of learning and application.
* Involvement in clinical audits.
* At least one Band 6 or senior Band 5 rotation in Frailty.


People Management and Development

* Experience supervising and appraising staff and students.
* Completion of clinical educator course.
